kansas city chiefs logoNew head coach Todd Haley will have his work cut out for him hits 2009 Kansas City Chiefs Season as he enters his first year as an NFL head coach.  Todd Haley spent last year soaring threw the regular season and the playoffs, finding himself calling plays on the sideline of the Superbowl for the NFC champion Arizona Cardinals.  This 2009 Kansas City Chiefs Season Preview however, shows that they might not end with a trip to Miami for a Superbowl party this year. The Kansas City Chiefs are in much disarray from last year and, star running back Larry Johnson no longer wants to perform wearing a Chief jersey.  Plus Todd Haley has become a pass first play caller, a strategy he will have to change as the Chiefs are designed for a run heavy offense.  Todd Haley is the only new coaching hire the Chiefs made this year, deciding to keep Defensive coordinator  Gunther Cunningham, allowing him a chance to improve the defense with out former head coach Herman Edwards in the way.  Offensive coordinator Chain Gailey who was hired by the team at the start of last year joins the efforts of head coach Todd Haley in hopes of changing an offense that finished 26th in the league last year.

2009 Kansas City Chiefs Free Agency And TradesJoining the team this year via the 2009 Kansas City Chiefs Free Agency and Trades is quarterback Matt Cassel, who shined for the patriots last year after Tom Brady went down for the entire season.  Also acquired from the patriots is LB Mike Vrabel who hopes to add leadership role to a defense that allowed nearly 400 yards of offense a game.  Wide Receiver C.J. Jones was also taken from the Patriots during free agent signings along with wide outs Terrance Copper from the Ravens, Bobby Engram from the Sea Hawks and, Rodney Wright from the Buffalo Bills.  To help Vrabel on the defensive side of the ball the Chiefs also signed CB Travis Daniels from the Browns, LB Monty Beisel from the Arizona Cardinals and LB Zach Thomas from the Dallas Cowboys.

2009 Kansas City Chiefs NFL DraftThe Chiefs and new Head Coach Todd Haley decided to help the defense this year taking three defensive players with the first 3 picks in the 2009 Kansas City Chiefs NFL Draft.  In the first round 3rd pick overall the Chiefs selected DE Tyson Jackson from LSU, who at the moment is projected to start at left end for the Chiefs as a rookie. In the 3rd round the Chiefs selected DT Alex Magee from Purdue at 67th overall pick. Later in the 4th round Kansas City choose CB Donald Washington from Ohio State who also might earn a starting spot on the roster as the season progress on.  The first offensive player taken in the 2009 NFL draft by the Chiefs with the 139th overall pick is MAN CHILD, Colin Brown form Missouri who comes in as a staggering 6 foot 8 and 335 pound OT.  The Chiefs continue to draft offensively in the later rounds selecting wide out Quinten Lawrence from Mcneese State at the 175th pick overall, RB Javarris Williams in the 7th round from Tennessee State with the 212 pick, TE/WR Jake O'Connell From Miami of Ohio in the 7th round 237th pick, and Ryan Succop K from South Carolina with the 256th and pick overall for the Chiefs.

2009 Kansas City Chiefs Quarterbacksmatt cassel kansas city chiefs quarterbackMatt Cassel comes over to join the 2009 Kansas City Chiefs Quarterbacks as the most important piece to the puzzle. Just like point guard play is so important in the NCAA basketball tournament so is the Quarterback efficiency in the NFL. Due to the fact that new Head Coach Todd Haley is a pass-first play caller, lots of pressure now falls on the shoulders of Matt Cassel as the team looks to rebuild the Kansas City Chiefs into a consistent playoff contender.  Matt Cassel played well last year finishing the season with 21 touchdown passes and only 11 interceptions, as well as passing for 3,693 yards in just his first year as an NFL starting Quarterback.  Tyler Thigpen who started 11 games for the Chiefs last years will play the back up at the start off the season.  Thigpen passed for 18 touchdowns in 2008 and is solid back up that already knows the Kansas City system.

2009 Kansas City Chiefs Running Backslarry johnson kansas city chiefs running backLarry Johnson comes back for another season as the featured player out of the 2009 Kansas City Chiefs Running Backs.  After an amazing 2005 and 2006 campaign in which Johnson rushed for over 1,700 yards consecutively and a total of 37 touchdowns in two seasons, Johnson has fallen apart.  In 2007 Johnson played only 8 games rushed for 559 yards and scored just 3 touchdowns.  He followed that up in 2008 with only 12 starts 874 rushing yards and just 5 touchdowns.  Larry Johnson hopes new head coach Todd Haley will build the offense off an aggressive run game allowing Johnson to get back to the form he once was.  Backing up Johnson this year is Jamal Charles a second year guy out of Texas.  as well as Jackie Battle, Dantrell Savage, and Colby Smith who saw some action last year during Larry Johnson's 4 game absence.  Starting Fullback is Mike Cox.

2009 Kansas City Chiefs Wide Receivers

Bet Ed Sportsbook For NFL Betting

Dwayne Bowe enters his third year in the NFL as one of the 2009 Kansas City Chiefs Wide Recievers and takes over as the main reciever after Tony Gonzalez joined the Atalanta Hawks via trade.  Dwayne Bowe fared well in his 2007 rookie season snatching 70 passes and 5 touchdowns, coming up 5 yards short of 1,000.  He followed that performance with any even better season in 2008 bringing in 86 receptions 7 touchdowns and 1,022 yards in the air.  Dwayne Bowe and new Quarterback Matt Cassel must work hard to get a presence for each other early on in the season.  If Matt can't find an open Dwayne Bowe, then there is always 6 foot 9 Tight End Brad Cottam running around in the middle of the field.  Cottam takes over as the starting Tight End for the Chiefs and adds a big time target for Matt Cassel to throw to on 3rd downs.  Backing up Cottam is TE Sean Ryan and, starting wide receiver opposite of Bowe is wide out Mark Bradley.  Backing up Bowe and Bradley are new free agent signings Terrance Copper and Bobby Engram.

2009 Kansas City Chiefs Offensive LineLeading the way this year for Larry Johnson is a hefty 2009 Kansas City Chiefs Offensive Line starting with LT Branden Albert, in only his second year Albert brings a 300 pound plus frame to the field.  Along side Albert is LG Brian Waters in his 9th year from North Texas.  At center is Rudy Niswanger starting his second year as the Chiefs center hoping to play all 16 games, as he missed only one last year.  Starting Right Guard is 11 year Veteran Mike Goff, newly acquired from the San Diego Chargers.  Last but not least is Damion McIntosh another 9 year Veteran who started every game last year as a Kansas City Chief.

2009 Kansas City Chiefs Defensive LineLast years first round pick nose tackle Glenn Dorsey, finally gets a little help attacking the passer, in the form of his old LSU teammate Tyson Jackson, the first pick for the 2009 Kansas City Chiefs Defensive Line.  Tyson Jackson is projected to start along the Left side of Dorsey, adding a big time pass rush to lackluster defense.  At right tackle is Alphonso Boone who has only record one sack in each of the last two years.  Much pressure is on Boone to perform at a higher level as 3rd year back ups Alex Magee and Tank Tyler both seek playing time in attempts to claim their first sacks as NFL players.

2009 Kansas City Chiefs LinebackersThe chiefs prefer to play a 4 linebacker set, placing much of the defensive responsibilities on the Linebacker core.  A big reason why the Chiefs signed Superbowl Champion and OLB Mike Vrabel to the team of 2009 Kansas City Chiefs Linebackers.  Vrabel's Experience well play a major role on the Chiefs defense, as he is expected to be an on the field leader in just his first year with the team.  On the inside the chiefs added another Veteran play maker in Zach Thomas who spent last year with the cowboys after being released by Miami Dolphins VP Bill Parcells.  Starting along side Thomas, as an Inside Linebacker is 5 year man Derrick Johnson, and starting at the other Linebacker position is Tamba Hali.

2009 Kansas City Chiefs SecondaryThe Chiefs have concern about their 2009 Kansas City Chiefs Secondary, hoping someone can establish themselves as a play maker.  Both starting Corner Backs, Brandon Carr and Brandon Flowers, have only one year of NFL experience.  Though they have shown signs of stability both snatching 2 interceptions as rookies.  Starting strong safety is Bernard Pollard who has spent all three years with the Chiefs and started all 16 games last season amounting to 98 total tackles in 2008.  Behind Pollard is free safety Jarrad Page, who has also spent his first three years with the Chiefs and, started all 16 games last year as well.  the combination of Pollard and Page could pay off this year as they have played well together the first three years of their careers.
