Giants Look To Continue Dominance At Arrowhead

NFL News - September 29th, 2009 - Written by John

new york giantsGiants at Chiefs -- For the first time since 2001, the Kansas City Chiefs host the Giants this week. In that year, the Giants eventually ended up winning the NFC Championship and making the first of their two Super Bowl appearances this decade. At 3-0, they are well on their way to repeating and have a great shot at starting 5-0 with a follow-up game against Oakland.

The Giants have already pulled way ahead in their division with wins over Washington and Dallas, and are favored this week on the road. BetUS is giving them a 9 1/2 edge against the struggling Chiefs, who haven't been able to put together a complete game.

They were tied with Baltimore 24-all late in their season-opener before surrendering two unanswered touchdowns. Then they blew their best chance for a division win, losing to the Raiders on a 5-yard scamper by Darren McFadden with a minute left in the game. Last week they were blown out by the Eagles to make them one of only seven teams left in the NFL without a win. It's not like Kansas City isn't paying big bucks to turn the franchise around. They spent a lot of money on then-offensive coordinator Todd Haley to lead the offense to the same heights reached by the '08 Arizona Cardinals. Then they baited New England into trading Pro Bowler Matt Cassel and Mike Vrabel for a first-round pick.

But their offense remains pedestrian, only gaining 4.6 yards per play. Part of the reason is because their roster is the second-youngest in the NFL with an age of 25.89, but another plausible reason is because the offense hasn't been able to sync itself. Cassel missed the final game of the preseason and then the opener with a knee injury. His first game back was understandibly awful and his encore was against the fifth-rated defense in the NFL.

The Giants, however, have looked like the team to beat in the NFC, winning two straight games on the road. A win Sunday would make them the first since 2006 to win three in a three-game road trip. It would also make them 4-0 for the first time since 1989.

The Giants have dominated the series, at least recently. They have won each of the previous three games against Kansas City and haven't lost at Arrowhead since 1995.
