san diego chargers logoAccording to the 2009 San Diego Chargers Season Preview, this year is looking quite promising for the Chargers Fans. The Chargers are a good team who always makes the playoffs but just can’t make it to the Super Bowl, but they are hoping to make it there this year for the second time in franchise history. They are returning all of their offense from last year, which was a potent offense spread evenly between running and passing. Luckily for them their division is rebuilding, so they have a pretty clear path to win the division. They also get the leader of the linebackers back from missing last year in Shawne Merriman.  Just in case Merriman is not quite 100 percent they used their first draft pick to get Larry English.

2009 San Diego Chargers Free Agency And Trades

2009 San Diego Chargers NFL DraftThe 2009 San Diego Chargers NFL Draft used their picks pretty wisely and fill some concerns in depth of some key positions. They snagged a great linebacker in Larry English, he should see quite a bit of playing time. No one saw Louis Vasquez going as high as they drafted him but they really needed to get a guard to help the offensive line. They got a much needed defensive tackle in Vaughn Martin who was not on many teams radar coming out of Western Ontario.

2009 San Diego Chargers QuarterbacksLast year was by far Philip Rivers best, he threw for a franchise record 34 touchdowns last season and lead the league in quarterback ratings with 105.5. He has still got the same receiving core from last year and also has the two headed running back in Tomlinson and Sproles. Each year Rivers has been with the Chargers he has improved, this year will be tough to top last year and I know he has the drive to do it. 2009 San Diego Chargers Quarterbacks Billy Volek and Charlie Whitehurst hold the back up jobs again this year.

2009 San Diego Chargers Running Backsladainian tomlinson san diego chargers running backLaDainian Tomlinson has the starting job locked down for the 2009 San Diego Chargers. Throughout his career Thomlinson has been very productive for the Chargers with the exception in the 2008 NFL Season. Overeal, Tomlinson has been good to the Chargers and the Chargers have been good to him. If Tomlinson can stay healthy and return to the same form of previous seasons, he could be just as explosive in his MVP Campaigns. With Tomlinson's slow start last year, Darren Sproles had the opportunity to show what he was capable of. Sproles demonstrated that if you give him an open field and do not contain the ends, he will be gone to the endzone quickly. Sproles' size is small, but he shows you he runs with his big heart which is exactlly what every one of the 2009 San Diego Chargers Running Backs should have. The third string running back coming into 2009 appears to be Michael Bennett who will spell Tomlinson and Sproles, late in games.

2009 San Diego Chargers Wide Receivers Last season when the Chargers picked up Chris Chambers everyone thought he was going to be the number one target for Rivers. Chambers had a decent year, but I think he got a lot of attention from cornerbacks. The person who saw the ball thrown to him was Vincent Jackson, who for the first time in his career got 1,000 yards in one season. Everyone knows their tight end Antonio Gates, who should be 100 percent, should have a much improved year. With Gates not 100 percent last year Rivers got to throw it to another tight end Malcom Floyd, who could see some more time this year as one of the main 2009 San Diego Chargers Wide Receivers.

2009 San Diego Chargers Offensive LineThe line last year was only average due to numerous injuries, if they can stay healthy and give Rivers some time everything should be fine. Nick Hardwick is healthy again which should be a big plus seeing how he is their center and leader on the line as part of the 2009 San Diego Chargers Offensive Line players. The tackles are Marcus McNeill and Jeromey Clary, McNeill is a solid blocker were as Clary needs to rebound from a tough season last year. The Chargers have veteran right guard returning in Mike Goff  and pro bowl left guard Kris Dielman.

2009 San Diego Chargers Defensive Line

The 2009 San Diego Chargers Defensive Line is said to be one to watch out for this year. The Chargers have a big presence in the middle of the front line in 12 year veteran Jamal Williams. He is getting up there in age but still dominates the smaller blockers in front of him and is often double teamed. They lost Igor Oshansky so trying to fill his hole at defensive end will be either Ryon Bingham or Jacques Cesaire. The other end is Luis Castillo who needs to bounce back from an under par season, after a big pay raise.

2009 San Diego Chargers Linebackersshawne merriman san diego chargers linebackerThe 2009 San Diego Chargers Linebackers are ready for the action that is in store in the upcoming 2009 NFL season. The two outside linebackers, for the 2009 San Diego Chargers, are some of the best in the NFL, Shaun Phillips and Shawne Merriman. If the Chargers defense is going to return to a high level of play, chances are that it will have to start with the linebackers, as it has in previous years. One thing that will help is the return of injured Shawne Merriman. Merriman is returning from a 2008 Season in which he missed most of, after trying to play with torn ligaments in his knee. Hopefully Merriman didn't permanently damage the joint. Barring that, Merriman should bounce back and plays like the leader of the line backing core. Stephan Cooper has one of the inside linebacker jobs locked down leading the team in tackles. Where for the other spot is a three way battle between Tim Dobbins, Matt Wilhelm, and rookie Larry English.

2009 San Diego Chargers Secondaryantonio cromartie san diego chargers cornerbackThe secondary was a major disappointment last season last season, hopefully cornerback Antonio Cromartie can comeback from a bum hip and play like two years ago. Cromartie was on a blistering pace in 2007, but saw his production fall way off during the 2008 NFL Season. The Chargers have hard hitting Quentin Jammer on the other side of Cromartie for the other corner. Jammer will also need to increase his presence, on the field, by playing tighter coverage and assisting with stopping the run, should it get outside. Clinton Hart and Steve Gregory split time and both struggled, but they are back to compete for a starting role. Free safety Eric Weddle likes to find the ball but when it is crunch time he is always in the wrong place.
