2010 New England Patriots Preview | 2010 NFL Team Previews

new england patriots logoNo 2009 New England Patriots Season Preview would be complete without Bill Belichick, A..K.A. "The Hoodie", and mastermind of the Patriots. Belichick enters his ninth season as the New England patriots head coach, and many say he is the best head coach in the last decade, surpassing Bill Parcells as the best head coach alive.  With three Superbowl victories in four years Belichick just might be the best the NFL has to offer.  Belichick has faced turmoil in the pass, with allegations such as video tapping practices of the other team before the Superbowl, and recording Quarterback audibles at the line of scrimmage.  That was two years ago however and in the past.  Belichick now answers other questions such as when he will win his next Superbowl.  Two years ago Belichick and the patriots finished the season 16-0, a feet that had not been accomplished sense the 1972 Dolphins finished the regular season undefeated.  The Patriots went on to the Superbowl that year with a record of 18-0, they faced the underdog New York Giants and lost, ruining hopes of becoming the first team in NFL history to finish a season 19-0. The 2008 season fell well short of that, as the Pats missed the NFL Playoffs but the 2009 New England Patriots should be much better with Tom Brady, back at the helm. The Patriots made a big coaching move this year allowing Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to become the head coach of the Denver Broncos, it's still unseen who will call the plays for the Patriots this year.  Bill Belichick is believed by most to take over as play caller for the patriots, however its more likely that Tom Brady will begin to call more plays at the line of scrimmage himself.  Two other minor coaching changes involve hiring Wide Receivers coach Chad O'Shea and special teams coordinator Scott O'Brien.

2009 New England Patriots Free Agency And TradesJoining this year are a couple of 2009 New England Patriots Free Agent Acquisitions such as LB Tully Banta-Cain from the San Francisco 49ers, Corner Back Leigh Bodden from the Detroit Lions, TE Chris Baker from the New York Jets, LB Vinny Ciurciu, and safety Brandon McGowan, all for mentioned players most likely wont get much time on the field.  Other free agent signings that should make a sudden impact are Wide Receiver Joey Galloway from the Tampa Buccaneers, RB Fred Taylor from the Jacksonville Jaguars, Alex Smith Tight End from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and, Shawn Springs Corner Back from the Washington Redskins.  Wide Out Gregg Lewis was acquired via trade from the Philadelphia Eagles, however it is still unsure how much time he will see after signing a deep ball threat in Joey Galloway.

2009 New England Patriots NFL DraftDue to the trade of Matt Cassel to the Kansas City Chiefs, the Patriots collected a total of 4 second round draft picks in the 2009 New England Patriots NFL Draft.  With the second selection in the 2nd round of the 2009 NFL draft the New England patriots took, Safety Patrick Chung from Oregon at the 34th pick overall. Only 6 picks later at the 40th pick overall, the Patriots selected DT Ron Brace from Boston College, and took Darius Butler CB from Connecticut the very next pick at 41st overall. The Patriots entered the 3rd round with a pair of picks, the first one came at 58th overall and the patriots selected OL Sebastian Vollmer from Houston.  With the 83rd overall pick the patriots stayed on the offensive side of the ball taking Wide Out Brandon Tate from North Carolina University. At the 123rd pick New England chose OLB Tyrone Mckenzie from South Florida 97th overall, followed by OG Rich Ohrnberger from Penn State with the 123rd overall Pick. Entering the 5th round the patriots have already selected 7 new players, and took George Bussey at OT from Louisville with the 170 pick overall.  The Patriots again have another 2 picks in the same round, round 6, selecting Jake Ingram LS from Hawaii 198th overall, and Myron Pryor DT from Kentucky at the 207th spot in the draft.  It's round 7 and the patriots yet again contain two picks in the same round, at 232nd overall the patriots selected Julian Edelman QB from Kent State and Darryl Richard DT from Georgia Tech with the 234th pick overall.

2009 New England Patriots Quarterbackstom brady new england patriots quarterbackTom Brady is back, to lead the 2009 New England Patriots Quarterbacks squad once again, for what should be another exciting year for New England Patriot fans.  Though the Patriots didn't go to the playoffs they showed signs that victories can be won without Tom Brady under center. The Patriots finished 11-5 last year an impressive record after losing star quarterback Tom Brady in the first game of the season.  Tom comes in this year ready to return to his old form. Lets not forget just two years ago Brady passed for 50 touchdowns an NFL record and just under 5,000 yards in the 2007 Season.  Behind Tom Brady at back up in case he gets hurt again is Kevin O'Connell and newly drafted quarterback Julian Edelman.

2009 New England Patriots Running BacksLaurence Maroney returns to the 2009 New England Patriots Running Backs as the featured tailback once again. Maroney played only 3 games last season all coming late in the year as he missed the first half of the season with injuries. Maroney was a highly talented prospect coming out of Minnesota while playing along side Marion Barber. Still, Maroney has not displayed his capabilities yet, never rushing over a 1,000 yards in a single season and has totaled only 12 touchdowns in three seasons all with patriots. The patriots will utilize more than just one running back this year, a practice they commonly use. Backing up Maroney this year are veterans Sammy Morris and Kevin Faulk as well as newly signed free agent Fred Taylor. All will likely see playing time this year.

2009 New England Patriots Wide Receiversrandy moss new england patriots wide receiverThe man who probably misses Tom Brady the most is all-start wide out Randy Moss. After two terrible season in 2005 and 2006 with the Oakland Raiders, Moss was traded to the New England Patriots.  In just his first year with the Patriots, Moss and Brady broke numerous NFL records. Moss totaled 98 receptions, 1,493 yards and 23 touchdown catches in first year as Tom Brady's team mate. The 2009 New England Patriots Wide Receivers look to open the season in much the same way the 2007 season started, with lots of touchdown catches. Lining up beside Moss this year is probably the best slot receiver the NFL has, Wes Welker, who enters just his 6th season as an NFL wide out. Welker still managed to catch 100 plus balls last year with out Tom Brady. If there is any more room to catch a pass new addition Joey Galloway will find it, starting opposite of Moss all year. At Tight End for the Patriots is Benjamin Watson who has not found his role on the field yet but should expect more touchdowns.

2009 New England Patriots Offensive LineThe 2009 New England Patriots Offensive Line remains the same again this year starting with pro bowler and commercial star Matt Light.  Light enters his 9th season all with the Patriots and has become the face of the Patriot offensive line wining all three Superbowl's with the team.  Standing next to Matt Light at LG is Logan Mankins another Offensive Line man who has spent his entire career with the Patriots.  At Center is Dan Koppen another Patriot lifer entering his 7th season as a Patriot.  Starting RG is Stephen Neal Entering his 9th season in the NFL all with the Patriots as well.  Last but not least is RT Nick Kaczur starting his 5th year in the NFL and again all with the Patriots.

2009 New England Patriots Defensive Line

Bet Ed Sportsbook For NFL Betting

The defensive side of the line begins with man child Vince Wilfork from the University of Miami.  sense joining the league 5 years ago. Wilfork has become a prime example of how a Nose Tackle should play in the 3-4 scheme, as he leads the 2009 New England Patriots Defensive Line.  To the left of Wilfork is LE Ty Warren standing 6 foot 5 and weighing in at over 300 pounds.  To the right of Wilfork is long time Patriot Richard Seymour, who after a injury plagued 2007 season came back strong in 2008 starting 15 games and adding 8 sacks.

2009 New England Patriots Linebackersadalius thomas new england patriots linebackerIn the 3-4 scheme that the 2009 New England Patriots Linebackers players is the foundation of the defense.  The linebacker core for the Patriots has stayed the same but, made a big move this year trading former starter Mike Vrabel to the Chiefs.  Tedy Bruschi is still on the team, and will remain the on the field leader for the Patriots again this year as one of the inside linebackers.  At strong side line backer is Adalius Thomas, who only played 9 games last year, the first time in four years he hasn't played in all 16 games.  Jerod Mayo starts his 2nd year in the NFL and adds the speed and youth to the linebacker core again this year.  In his rookie year Mayo started all 16 games and tackled opponents 128  times.  Weak side linebacker is Pierre Woods 4 year man out of Michigan starting for the first time in his NFL career.

2009 New England Patriots SecondaryTo lead the 2009 New England New England Patriots Secondary this year is strong safety Brandon Meriweather, third year man from Miami.  Coach Belichick thinks Meriweather can become one of the premier safeties in the NFL.  At left side corner back is Jonathan Wilhite entering only his 2nd year in the NFL, but possibly could drop his starting position to new free agent signing and long time veteran Shawn Springs form the Washington Redskins.  Starting free safety is James Sanders, who looks to improve along side highly talented SS Brandon Meriweather, James has played 4 years with the patriots.  At right side corner back is Leigh Bodden entering his first year with the New England Patriots.  Back ups include Antwain Spann, Rey Ventrone and, Terrance Wheatley.
