Patriots Release Galloway

NFL News - October 20th, 2009 - Written by John

gallowayOver the last several weeks, the New England Patriots have chose to do without newly signed Joey Galloway.

On Tuesday, they chose to eliminate him for the rest of the 2009 NFL Season. ProFootballTalk confirmed the rumors that Galloway has been cut from the team after signing a one-year deal over the off-season. He was cut just before the trade deadline, which makes him an unrestricted free agent. He can sign with any team, but is guaranteed his base salary of $1.15 million from the Patriots.

He was deactivated during the last three weeks without the appearance of an injury, partially because he couldn't pick up the offense. He only had seven receptions for 67 yards all season. But another big part was because of the emergence of Julian Edelman. The rookie from Akron was inserted into the offense when Wes Welker was injured and seemed to be effective. He had 113 yards receiving between weeks Two and Three and has 157 kickoff return yards.

The Patriots are also reportedly high on wide out Brandon Tate as well.

The release signals somewhat of an amicable breakup. Galloway wasn't a disruption with the team and New England chose to let him choose his next team, rather than choose it for him (i.e. Richard Seymour). ProFootballTalk also speculated that the Ravens were eyeing Galloway for a trade, but at some point backed off. Another team that could use a wideout? His former team, Tampa Bay.
