Cleveland Goes Back To Quinn As Starter Against Baltimore On MNF

NFL News - November 11th, 2009 - Written by Scott

brady quinnThe Cleveland Browns have not been able to find any answers to their problems on offense. Head coach Eric Mangini has announced that he will resort back to Brady Quinn as their starter on Monday night against the Baltimore Ravens. The Browns have been dreadful offensively this year and are 30th in scoring, 31st in total yards, and 32nd in passing. Quinn will replace Derek Anderson after he failed to produce and led the Browns to just a 1-4 record after replacing Quinn in Week 3. Brady was replaced at half time by Anderson in their 34-3 loss to Cleveland on September 27th. Quinn will now get his chance at redemption against one of the toughest defenses in the league.

"I'm excited to play," Quinn said. "I'm excited to be a part of Monday night. Every team in the 2009 NFL is tough, them especially. We've got our hands full right now."

Anderson's ineffectiveness led to Mangini's decision. He had only completed 43% of his passes and had and NFL low quarterback rating of 36.2. His touchdown to interception ratio was another reason for the change. Anderson had only 2 touchdowns compared to 9 interceptions since replacing Quinn. Mangini has stated he would like to stay with Quinn for the remainder of the season and has been impressed with his performance in practice and his work ethic since being replaced by Anderson.

"He's had good weeks of practice," Mangini said. "He's worked hard since the first transition was made. I look forward to him taking advantage of this opportunity and helping us improve."

The Browns are now 1-7 and are in the process of just trying to salvage their season. Their offense has produced just 5 touchdowns this year and are hoping that Quinn came come in and revitalize their stagnant offense. Quinn is just 1-5 as a starter and has completed 59.7% of his passes this year. He has thrown for 409 yards and 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions. The Browns' struggles are not just limited to the quarterback position. They have not been able to move the ball on the ground either. Their leading rusher, running back Jamal Lewis, has gained only 349 yards and has yet to find the end zone. The biggest challenge for Cleveland's offense is obvious, find a way to get into the end zone. Whether or not Quinn can provide the spark, only time will tell.
