Redskins Giving Up Seven In Tampa

NFL News - September 29th, 2009 - Written by John

redskinsRedskins at Buccaneers -- Amidst triumph, there is always tragedy.

As the Detroit Lions flooded the field, emotions pouring over their first win in the last 20 games, there stood the Washington Redskins, stunned by becoming the dubious. They were the first team to lose to the Lions since December of 2007, outraged by the hole they created for themselves. They had problems before that, too, only scoring one touchdown in the first two games and falling to 0-1 in a brutal division. And with the ensuing firestorm from the media and supporters, the Redskins try to put away those memories and salvage the season on Sunday when they travel to Tampa.

They are favored by a touchdown, despite recent struggles, according to BetUS. As of Tuesday, they are also getting a 37-point over/under. But this one has a chance of staying closer. Washington has only won one of the last four meetings against Tampa Bay, the lone win coming in the 2005 playoffs.

The 'Skins get the nod primarily because the Buccaneers are panicking. Upon being shut out at home by the New York Giants, head coach Raheem Morris has shaken up the locker room. He made waves through the headlines when he initially supported his starting quarterback, Byron Leftwich, saying that he would not be relegated to the bench. He even went so far as to say he would bench all 21 other starters if he yanked Leftwich. Monday, however, something or someone changed his mind and promoted Josh Johnson to starter.

Then on Tuesday, Morris called out two of his most high-profile players, suggesting Kellen Winslow was giving a poor effort on a 3rd-and-5 play (which he was stopped a yard short) and that Aqib Talib should've had an interception on the Giants first drive (which he should have). Most of it is just hot air but does beg the question of chemistry.

Washington's Jason Campbell has been under heat for his efficient, yet unremarkable, play at quarterback. He has the fifth-highest completion percentage and has thrown for 793 yards, but his 3-to-2 touchdown/interception ratio hasn't been anything to brag about. But he hasn't been helped at all by the Redskins rushing attack. Clinton Portis is only running at a 61 yards per game clip and doesn't have a touchdown yet.
