Jay Cutler rebounds with Impressive Performance Against the Giants

NFL News - August 23rd, 2009 - Written by Bruce

Bears fans saw the type of offensive production they were hoping for when the team acquired Pro Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler this off season. After struggling in the team's first preseason game last week at Buffalo, Cutler looked sharp last night leading the Chicago Bears to a 17-3 win over the New York Giants. In what his first home game in front of the Soldier Field crowd, Cutler led the Bears to scoring drives on all three possessions that he played. He led the Chicago offense on two long touchdown drives, the first from 80 yards followed by the second from 92 yards. Cutler finished the game an impressive 8-13 for 121 yards and one touchdown.

In his debut as Chicago's new quarterback, Jay Cutler got a to a rough start completing only five out ten passes to go along with one interception. The Bears lost that game 27-20 to the Bills, which was the first preseason game for both teams this season. Last night against the Giants, Cutler exhibited his rocket arm in a great performance which erased any doubts of why the team traded for him. He outplayed the Giants starting quarterback Eli Manning, who finished the game 7-10 for 62 yards. Manning struggled in his four series of action as he was sacked twice, fumbled once, and was also called for an intentional grounding. Manning along with back up quarterbacks Andre Woodson and David Carr were unable to find the end zone last night against a touch Chicago defense. The Bears held the Giants to only eleven first downs for the entire game.

Cutler's first pass in front of the home crowd in Chicago was a 27 yard completion to his former Vanderbilt teammate Earl Bennett. He followed that up with a ten yard completion to Denver Hester which got the fans cheering in excitement. The two nearly connected for a big play to start the second quarter. Hester got more than ten yards behind the closest Giants' defender, but Cutler barely overthrew him in what would have been a sure fire touchdown. The Bears are hoping to see big plays out of this combination in Cutler's first year under center in Chicago.
