Vince Young To Be Named Titans Starter Against Jacksonville

NFL News - October 30th, 2009 - Written by Scott

youngThe Tennessee Titans have announced that they plan to start Vince Young on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Titans have started the season 0-6 and are looking to make a change at the quarterback position. Tennessee owner Bud Adams told head coach Jeff Fisher earlier this week that he preferred to go in a different direction and that Young should get an opportunity. The Titans only had two quarterbacks on the roster since they cut Patrick Ramsey after week 3 but on Wednesday, added John David Booty to the practice squad.

Young will replace Kerry Collins as the starter after Collins had not been able to lead the offense. On the year, Collins has only completed 54% of his passes and has thrown for 1,071 yards and 5 touchdowns. The 15-year veteran has also thrown 8 interceptions on the year. The Titans offense has gotten good play out of their rushing offense, but are ranked 25th in the league in passing and 27th in points with only 14 per game. Fisher noted the two differences in the styles of his quarterbacks and thought withholding naming a starter could be to his team's advantage.

"I'm going to assume that as long as we can keep this thing a mystery, the better chances we have," Fisher said. "There's clearly a difference in skill-sets between the two quarterbacks. That's obvious."

Young has always been considered the Titan's quarterback of the future. He won the NFL's Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2006 and took them to the playoffs in 2007. He lost his starting job to Collins in the season opener in 2008 after throwing 2 interceptions and suffering a sprained knee. Collins went on to lead the Titans to league best 13-3 record and a trip to the playoffs before making an early exit in the first round. Tennessee has gotten off to a dreadful start this season and this has prompted the change.

Young has only appeared in two games this season and has attempted 5 passes in limited duty. He brings a different element to their offense with his ability to run and has rushed for 979 yards. Young is 18-11 as a starter and has thrown for 4,964 yards while completing only 56.9% of his passes. In his NFL career, he has 22 touchdown passes, but has 33 interceptions.
