Some Come Off And Some Still On The NFL Week 5 Injury Reports

NFL News - October 10th, 2009 - Written by Jimmy

nflComing into Week 5 of the Season, the NFL Injuries are adding up, in key places, for certain teams, however there is good news for some.

One of the more notable injuries, last week, was to New York Giants QB Eli Manning. In last week's game against the Kansas City Chiefs, Manning dropped back and somehow bruised his heel. Officially diagnosed as Plantar Fasciitis, Manning missed practice for most of this week. Manning was able to rejoin the team during Friday's practice, which is a very good sign that he will likely play Sunday against the Oakland Raiders.

"If the medical people think he can play, then he will play," said Head Coach Tom Coughlin courtousy of the Associated Press. "We'll evaluate him every day. I know he wants to play in the worst way, but we're not going to go against the medical people. We're not going to pencil him in and say he's playing."

Coughlin is being very cautious with his franchise quarterback, especially in a game where Manning likely won't be needed. Coughlin's 4-0 New York Giants are facing the 0-4 Oakland Raiders.

Should Manning not be able to go on Sunday, the Giants will likely turn to backup QB David Carr.

Another NFL QB, Matt Hasselbeck, looks to make his return to lead the struggling Seattle Seahawks (1-3) against the Jacksonville Jaguars (2-2). Hasselbeck left in week 2 action, in a game against the San Francisco 49ers with a cracked/broken rib. Since that time, Hasselbeck has been unable to play, missing the previous 2 games.

"Matt got better every day. He got more comfortable every day," Head Coach Jim Mora Jr. said to the Associated Press. "We're going to list him as probable ... and probable is a pretty good sign that he will play.

Hasselbeck and his top WR, Nate Burleson, are excited about Hasselbeck's potential return. Burleson is very happy that he will have his guy under center. Burleson says that his number of catches along with average yards per reception both go up whenever Hasselbeck plays. That should prove to be true as Hasselbeck and the Seahawks face the 31st rated pass defense of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Other notable injuries include Dallas Cowboys WR Roy Williams. Williams is currently listed as doubtful after injuring his ribs against the Denver Broncos last week. Also for the Cowboys, RB Felix Jones will not play Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Not that Matt Stafford wanted to miss any time due to injury, however if he is, he picked a good week to do it facing the formidable Pittsburgh Steelers' defense. The Detroit Lions number 1 overall draft pick is currently doubtful to play after suffering a dislocated kneecap last week against the Chicago Bears.

With that said, Lions' head coach Jim Schwartz isn't volunteering any information. "I'll announce a starting quarterback on Sunday," Schwartz said to the Associated Press after Friday's practice. "There's still a lot of time between now and the game, and we'll have to see how things go."

Stay tuned to media outlets as game time decisions will be made about an hour before kickoff on Sunday. Decisions on these players will surely make a difference in the NFL Week 5 Betting Lines.
