Lindell's Field Goal In Overtime Lifts Buffalo Past New York 16-13

NFL News - October 19th, 2009 - Written by Scott

buffalo billsAfter missing a 46 yard field goal attempt at the end of regulation to seal the win, place kicker Rian Lindell nailed a game winning field goal in overtime to give the Buffalo Bills a 16-13 win over the New York Jets. The Bills had to rely on back up quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick (116 yards and 1 touchdown) after starter Trent Edwards left the game early in the second quarter with a concussion. Buffalo snapped a three game losing streak and took advantage of New York Jets' quarterback Mark Sanchez's five interceptions to improve their record to 2-4.

"That sure was a great win for our football team," coach Dick Jauron said. "We certainly needed it. I can't say enough about that group of guys. They won't quit, no matter what happens."

Buffalo got the early lead in the first quarter on a 33 yard filed goal from Lindell. The Jets would respond with 35 seconds left in the opening quarter on a 23 yard field goal from Jay Feely. Feely would hit another field goal midway through the second quarter to put the Jets ahead 6-3. New York running back Thomas Jones, who finished with 210 yards rushing, would then score his only touchdown of the day on a 71 yard touchdown run that put the Jets up 13-3 heading into half time.

Lindell would get the Bills within a touchdown after he converted his second field goal of the game from 25 yards out. They would follow up with a 37 yard touchdown pass from Fitzpatrick to tie the game at 13 apiece. This is where the score remained until the end of regulation.

The Jets had an opportunity early in overtime to get the win, but holder Steve Weatherford could not handle the snap on a 50 yard field goal attempt. This would lead the way for Lindell to hit his 47 yard field goal with 2:44 seconds remaining to give the Bills the win.

"I told them, 'Let's get inside the 30 and hammer away,'" Lindell said. "I've got to make that."

The Jets outgained the Bills 414-296 in total yardage. New York had a huge day rushing with 318 yards, 309 of them coming from Jones and running back Leon Washington. Buffalo did an outstanding job defensively, despite their poor rushing defense and forced 6 turnovers, with 5 coming from Sanchez. Sanchez finished with just 119 yards on the day and was undoubtedly disappointed with his effort.

"I don't know if I could play any worse," Sanchez said. "It was totally my fault and I owe these guys a lot. Of the six games, three losses, two of them I felt like you can blame No. 6 on offense. That's not a good feeling. I've got to turn this thing around."

The Jets will have an opportunity to end their 3 game losing skid when they play the Oakland Raiders, who got their first win of the year on Sunday, in Week 7.
