Kansas City's Four FGs Good Enough to Beat 'Skins

NFL News - October 18th, 2009 - Written by John

kc cheifsThe Washington Redskins benched Jason Campbell at halftime and maybe sacking their head coach not long after. For the fourth time this season, the Redskins lost to a previously winless team on Sunday, falling to the Kansas City Chiefs, 14-6. Kicker Ryan Succop was the hero for the day and put himself in great position to compete with Cleveland Browns return man Josh Cribbs for special teams player of the week. He kicked four field goals, including a go-ahead 46-yarder to give the Chiefs their first win this year.

It helped avoid the franchise's first 0-6 start, and was it's first win since last November. The team has been increasingly competitive in recent weeks, narrowly losing to the Dallas Cowboys in overtime in what would've been the stunner of the year thus far. But it was not to be, although it did provide momentum for this week. Many experts pegged this week to be the one Kansas City finally breaks through, after Detroit, New York and Carolina each won their first game of the year against the 'Skins.

Succop made three other field goals from distances of 39, 46, and 24 yards -- the 24 yarder coming in the last minute of the game. With a chance to drive the length of the field to tie it, Washington quarterback Todd Collins was sacked by Tamba Hali in the end zone to end it.

Collins entered the game at halftime after the offense sputtered once again with Campbell calling the shots. Campbell was 9 of 16 for 89 yards and a pick in the first half. Collins appeared to give the team a spark, hitting Santana Moss with a 42-yard dart on his first series. But it was simply a mirage, finishing with only 75 total yards passing and only two field goals. Clinton Portis led the team with 109 yards rushing, the first time he broke the century mark this year, on 15 carries.

Dwayne Bowe led all receivers with 109 yards on six catches.
