Vick Returns, Eagles Pound Chiefs

NFL News - September 27th, 2009 - Written by John

eaglesMichael Vick's return to the NFL was brief and uneventful but was still enough to make him the headliner in a lopsided blowout.

He only touched the ball three times, going 0-for-2 passing with one rush of seven yards. But simply getting on the field was an accomplishment in itself. In his first game since 2006, Vick was part of a 34-14 win Sunday. It didn't hurt that the Eagles depth chart looks terrific.

With Donovan McNabb and Brian Westbrook being held out of the game because of injuries, the Eagles' depth chart was able to make it's case. And a pair of reserves took full advantage. Kevin Kolb shined in his second career start, picking up back-to-back 300 yard performances, and LeSean McCoy ran the ball 20 times for 84 yards and a touchdown. Kolb completed 24 of his 34 passes for 327 yards and two touchdowns. His two main beneficiaries were DeSean Jackson and Brian Celek, each averaging over 10 yards a catch. They both also had 100 yards and a score.

The Eagles took a commanding lead early on when McCoy punched in his touchdown from five yards out. Kolb then added a rushing touchdown of his own when he plunged through on a keeper to make it 14-0.

The Chiefs finally got on the board in the second quarter when Matt Cassel hit Mark Bradley for a 13-yard touchdown to get within seven. That's as close as they would ever get though. The Eagles piled it on to the tune of 20 unanswered points and never looked back.

Cassel, who was brought in to revitalize the Chiefs stagnant offense, only threw for 90 yards and averaged a meager five yards per completion. His second touchdown came when the Eagles were shuffling in their reserves, getting an easy nine-yard toss to Bobby Wade with just under two minutes remaining. Kansas City was out-gained 420 to 196.
