Odds To Win 2011 BCS Championship Already Out At Sportsbooks

Sports News - January 14th, 2010 - Written By Bryan

bcs logoThe 2009-10 college football season left yet another reason for why many cry out for a playoff system over the Bowl Championship Series. While the BCS National Championship game featured a pair of undefeated teams for the first time since 2005, three other unbeaten teams were left on the outside, looking in.

Alabama captured the crown in a win over Texas, but Cincinnati, TCU and Boise State all finished the regular season undefeated. Despite that, the BCS System found little difficulty in deciding that The Crimson Tide would face the Longhorns, thus leaving more room for debate coming into the 2010-11 season.

At the conclusion of the 2009-10 football season, the College Football landscape saw Boise State and Alabama as the only teams to remain unblemished through their bowl game. Alabama, as mentioned previously, won the National Championship, while Boise State earned a win over TCU in the Fiesta Bowl to finish the season at 14-0.

The SEC collected its fourth consecutive BCS National Championship in the 2009-10 College Football Season. Widely perceived as the best conference in college football over the last decade, however coming into 2010, the National Championship odds show that the race is wide open. Oddsmakers are not not a quick to jump on the SEC Bandwagon just yet for a fifth straight, as the betting lines show.

Here is a look at the top five favorites to win the 2010-11 BCS National Championship game in Glendale, Arizona.

The defending National Champion Alabama Crimson Tide are the heavy favorite to repeat next season, currently going off at +200. The Crimson Tide finished this season a unanimous No. 1. They'll lose a couple of key players such as Butkus Award winner and All-American Linebacker Rolando McClain to the NFL, but will still retain the majority of starters. While the losses will hurt, what's most important is that the Tide still have Nick Saban. The last two seasons, Alabama has finished undefeated in the regular season under Saban. The Crimson Tide are set to compete for a championship for years to come.

Ohio State is the second favorite to claim next year's BCS National Championship. Currently, the Buckeyes are going off at +500 according to College Football Future Betting Lines. Last season, led by Sophomore QB Terrell Pryor, the Buckeyes finally broke through with a BCS win in the Rose Bowl over Oregon. Ohio State had struggled of late in the postseason, getting blown out in back-to-back National Championship games against the SEC, as well as a Rose Bowl defeat at the hands of Texas, but has recently righted the ship. The Buckeyes finished 11-2 in 2009, with a Big Ten conference record of 7-1. OSU will not lose many players to the NFL and should be stable on both sides of the football coming into 2010.

The Oregon Ducks are the first team other than USC to win the Pac-10 conference Title in seven years. The Ducks finished 8-1 in the Pac-10 this season at 10-3 overall. They faced Ohio State in the Rose Bowl and lost in a tightly contested match up, 26-17. Behind QB Jeremiah Masoli, the Ducks are poised to make another run at a conference crown and a National Championship. They are going off at +1000 odds or 10 to 1.

Texas was the other participant in the BCS National Title game this season, losing to Alabama. The Longhorns are the fourth highest favorite to win next years National Championship, with odds currently at +1200. The loss of the NCAA's all-time winningest QB in Colt McCoy is sure to hurt the Longhorns on offense, but true freshman QB Garret Gilbert gained valuable experience in the National Championship game following McCoys early injury. Most of the Longhorns' defense will return and will be a strength of this football team in 2010.

Boise State crashed the BCS party this season, capping off a perfect year with a win in the Fiesta Bowl over. They have at least earned the respect of the 2010-11 College football National Championship oddsmakers, as they are currently a favorite to win the it all next season. The Broncos are currently going off at +1300. Boise State finished undefeated for the second time in four years, and are on the college football landscape to stay. They have changed the reputation of non-automatic BCS qualifiers forever. Behind rising star-QB Kellen Moore, the Broncos are poised to make another undefeated run next year, and will try to be the first member of a non-BCS Conference to play for a National Championship.
