Yankees Take Game 2 Over Phillies 3-1

NFL News - October 30th, 2009 - Written by Scott

yankeesThe New York Yankees got solo home runs from Mark Teixeira and Hideki Matsui to take Game 2 of the World Series and beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-1. The Yankees got a strong performance by starting pitcher A.J. Burnett and will send the series to Philadelphia tied at 1 apiece. Burnett went seven innings and allowed just one run on four hits while striking out nine. After Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee silenced the Yankees bats on Wednesday night, Burnett heard Lee talking about confidence in a post game interview.

"He talked about belief in his stuff, and all I told myself last night and today was the same thing," Burnett said. "I went out tonight with confidence, and just, you know, the game just rolled by."

The Phillies jumped on top in the second inning as Raul Ibanez scored on a single by Matt Stairs to put them ahead 1-0. The Yankee fans got back into the game quickly on Teixeira's solo shot to right field that tied the game at 1.

"I think the home run got the crowd back in it," Teixeira said. "It kind of put a little bit of a crack in their armor."

With two out in the sixth inning, the Yankees would take the lead for good as Matsui reached for a pitch below his knees and hit a solo home run to right field. Brett Gardner would score New York's final run of the game in the seventh inning on Jorge Posada's single to center.

Losing pitcher Pedro Martinez had a good outing, but did not have any offensive support as the Phillies managed just 6 hits in the game. Martinez pitched 6 innings and allowed 3 runs on 6 hits. He also struck out 8 and allowed just 2 walks. He held Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez without a hit, who is now 0-8 in the World Series. Rodriguez has been silent at the plate after leading his team throughout the playoffs.

"I know he'll bounce back," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "We'll get it going with him in Philly."
