Tebow, Bradford, and McCoy Headline Heisman Betting Match Ups

Sports Betting News - September 1st, 2009 - Written by Jimmy

heismanThe race for college football's most prestigious award is always an intense battle throughout the season.  Throughout college football history, Heisman winners usually dart for NFL after winning this award.  However, this year is set to be an interesting one in terms of the Heisman winner being revealed.  With Sam Bradford, Tim Tebow, and Colt McCoy returning for their senior season, this will prove to be an exciting race.  Bradford won the award last year in 2008. Tebow who won the award in 2007 looks to be a two time recipient as he attempts to lead his Florida Gators to back to back national championships.  McCoy was 2008 Heisman runner-up to Bradford.  Who will have the most 1st place votes between these two great quarterbacks will depend on their play this year.

Bradford is looking to become only the second player in history to win the award in back to back seasons.  This could be difficult as the Oklahoma Sooners are breaking in almost an entire new offensive line.  Also, this could make it much harder for him to put up Heisman winner numbers like he did in 2008.  Bradford passed completed 328 of 483 pass attempts for 4,720 yards and 50 touchdowns.

Tebow is coming off another very solid year in 2008.  He not only led his Gators to the national championship, he also had great statistics and ended up placing third in the Heisman voting, despite winning the award the previous year.  His career numbers are nothing short of impressive.  He has accounted for 110 touchdowns, 67 throwing and 43 rushing in his three years at Florida.  He has also passed for 6,390 yards with only 11 interceptions.  The Heisman voting is not based on career statistics though.  How he performs this season will ultimately be the deciding factor in this year's race. In addition, it has been rumored that back up quarterback John Brantley will see significant palying time this year.

Colt McCoy comes into the 2009 year after winning the Walter Camp Award in 2008.  Last year, McCoy passed for an astounding 3,859 yards connecting on 332 of 443 attempts.  He also threw for 34 touchdowns during the 2008 season and completed 76.7% of his passes to break the Division 1 record. McCoy also helped out the Longhorns running game by rushing for 561 yards and 10 touchdowns.  He was the clear front runner in last year's Heisman race until the middle of the season when Texas lost to Texas Tech 38-33 on November 1.  Unlike Tebow, he has the benefit of having his offensive line back this year and his top playmaker Jordan Shipley. An October 17 matchup with Oklahoma should be a great guage as to where he will rank in regards to the Heisman voting.

With two of these three frontrunners already winning the award, this makes it the first time in history that two former winners are competing for a second trophy. Odds makers at Bodog have the following odds listed for these three head to head matchups. In the head to head matchup between Tim Tebow and Colt McCoy, the payout for McCoy set at -120 and for Tebow -110.  In Bradford vs. McCoy  the payout set at -120 for Bradford and -110 for McCoy.  Finally, in the matchup with Bradford and Tebow, payout for Bradford is at -115 and same holds true for Tebow at -115.
