Yankees Look To Win The Title In Game 6 Tonight In New York

NFL News - November 4th, 2009 - Written by Scott

The New York Yankees will have an opportunity tonight to clinch their 27th championship as they face Philadelphia in Game 6 tonight in New York. They squandered a chance to win it all in Game 5 and now will turn to starting pitcher Andy Pettitte to give them the crown. He is 3-0 this postseason and has an ERA of 3.24 in his four starts. Pettitte will be pitching on three day's rest and realized how tough this series would be.

"I think everybody knew it was going to be a great Series. I think everybody knew it was going to be a tough Series. And it looks like it's living up to that," Pettitte said Tuesday.

The Phillies are attempting to become the first team to come back and win the World Series after being down 3-1. Philadelphia will send Pedro Martinez to the mound in Game 6 and will face the 37 year old Pettitte for the seventh time in his career. However, the stakes have never been this high. Martinez was the losing pitcher in game 2 after giving up 3 runs in six innings of work.

"Two old goats out there doing the best they can and having fun with it," Martinez said. "I don't have enough words to describe how excited I am about being here. This is just a great gift to me."

Philadelphia will need to continue to get a strong offensive performance from Chase Utley. Utley has 5 home runs in the series and this equals the mark set by former Yankee Reggie Jackson. The Phillies have been struggling to get any offense from slugger Ryan Howard. Howard has been in a slump during the series and is just 3 for 19 (.158) and has stuck out 12 times. In the NLCS series, he batted .333 and had 2 home runs and 8 RBIs against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Yankees manager Joe Girardi credits his pitchers for his lack of production.

"I think we've made good pitches to him," Girardi said. "I think we've changed speeds on him, we've moved the ball around him. He's an extremely dangerous hitter, and if you don't make pitches, you're not going to get him out, and he proved that in the first two rounds. But our guys have done a good job of just moving the ball around on him."

With the Yankees leading the series 3-2, the Phillies find themselves in a must-win situation. A loss sends them home and gives the Yankees the title, but a win will keep them around for Game 7. BetUS sporstbook has the line for the Phillies set at +1 1/2 (+170) and -1 1/2 (-200) with a run total set at 9, for thsoe of you who are doing some MLB Betting, good luck and be sure to check out our MLB Odds page..
