Tyson Booked On Assault Charges

Sports News - November 12th, 2009 - Written by John

mike tysonIf Boxing Betting Sportsbooks had odds on getting into trouble with the law, Tyson would definitely be favored. Two weeks ago, Mike Tyson appeared on the Oprah show alongside Evander Holyfield as a means of exorcising his prior demons, and revealed that keeping a more subdued demeanor lately is a struggle he fights every day.

But on Wednesday, Tyson finally relapsed, allegedly punching a freelance photographer at an airport, and was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor batter. Police responded to the Los Angeles airport, where the two men allegedly began fighting. The photographer, Tony Echevarria, 50, told police that Tyson hit him and he fell down. He received a cut on the forehead and was treated for it, and plans on pressing charges.

The Associated Press reports that Tyson was at the airport, per his spokeswoman, and was headed to Las Vegas with his wife and child. The spokeswoman said Tyson was simply reacting to a unscrupulous paparazzi, and also plans on filing charges.

There were reports that Echevarria followed Tyson as far as to the men's room interior to get a picture. It wouldn't be that hard to believe, given witnesses support the statement. The airport is one of the best spots to get pictures of celebrities because they are always traveling, far better than hoping for juice at a strip mall or waiting at a driveway entrance.

"There's a lot of different versions to this story and that's all going to come out later," sgt. Jim Holcomb, spokesman for the police, said. "Some witness statements support Tyson's version, others support the photographer's."

Tyson has been involved with the law ever since he became the youngest heavyweight champion ever in 1986. He was convicted of rape in 1992, pled no contest to assault in 1999, and pled guilty of cocaine possession just two years ago. He was disqualified from a 1997 title fight when he bit Holyfield's ear on two separate occasions. Then in 2003, he filed for bankruptcy.
