Rose Bowl To Possibly Allow Non BCS Conference Teams A Berth

Sports Betting News - July 30th, 2009 - Written by Jimmy

The Rose Bowl has become the first bowl, to allow the teams without automatic BCS Bowl bids, a chance to play in their bowl game. Normally, this wouldn't be news, but in previous years, The Big Ten and the PAC 10 were contractually bound, to send their league champions, to play in the New Years Day Bowl game. This has always been the case unless one of those conference champions was playing in the BCS National Championship Game.

Since the BCS has taken effect, in 1998, there hasn't ever been a team, outside of the Big Ten or PAC10, to play in the Rose Bowl. The exception to that was when the National Title game was the Rose Bowl game, a contest between Miami, FL and Nebraska.

This new rule would allow teams, from the Western Athletic Conference, Conference USA, Sun Belt and Mid American Conference, to have a chance to play for a possible spot in the Rose Bowl, dubbed as the "Grandaddy Of Them All". The past few years, several teams, outside of BCS conferences, such as Utah, Hawaii, and Boise State have had a chance to compete in BCS Bowl games, however it was never in the Rose Bowl. With the advent of these new rules, even those conferences would have the right, to play in the Rose Bowl, provided that the Big 10 or PAC 10 Champion is in the National Title Game.

Though possible, it is no easy task for non BCS Conference teams, to make it to BCS Bowls. For these teams to be able to participate, they must have a near perfect season all while being ranked, in top 8 of the BCS poll, at the end of the regular season.  The new rules will be implemented for the 2010 season, and will run through the 2013 season. This development is big news, for any team from a non automatic bid conference, to have a chance to make some really good money, for their school.

Utah made a lot of big noise over the off season about a possible playoff system, which probably has no chance, until the deal with the BCS Contract is up, in five years. This is not quite what the Utah fans, or other non automatic bid conference teams wanted, but it is more than they had in the past. While not exactly what they wanted, a possible berth, to The Rose Bowl, is a step in the right direction.
