Pistons Coach Curry Cut Loose

Sports Betting News - July 1, 2009 - Written by Glen

pistonsFormer player turned coach, Michael Curry, was fired from his position with the Detroit Pistons. After a season of underachievement and speculation that Curry may be detrimental to general business in the off season, Pistons president Joe Dumars made the tough decision mere hours prior to the beginning of the NBA free agency.

Estimations show the Pistons at having more cash to play with in the free agency this year, and Curry's tumultuous season was seen as a possible liability when disbursing money for new players. After going 39-43 in the 2008-2009 season, the Pistons will need to draw in some new players if they are to hope to make it back into the playoffs. Their season ended with a sweep against the Cavaliers and LeBron James in the first round of the playoffs.

In ten seasons the Pistons have seen six different Coaches. Joe Dumars has, seemingly, no tolerance to error, as he has shown in the past. Some argue that Dumars releasing Curry after just one season may have been a folly. Despite losing in the first round of the playoffs, a rookie coach taking a team to the playoffs shouldn't be overlooked. While some maintain that this is shortsighted, Dumars has the bigger picture to look at. The offseason will make the next season, and the franchise could use all the improvement possible.

Since 2002, the Pistons have been in every playoffs series. This year's free agency holds names such as Hedo Turkoglu and Ben Gordon, two names which Detroit is expected to chase.

Curry had one of the lowest win counts of any Pistons coach, so the change may have been for the better. Regardless, it will make the next season by the Pistons a provocative season, and the myriad of new faces is bound to add to the intrigue.
