Phil Mickelson Set to Make his PGA Tour Return

Sports Betting News - July 29th, 2009 - Written by Bruce

After missing nearly two months, Phil Mickelson is set to make his return to the PGA Tour next week at the World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational. Mickelson took the time off to be with his family as his mother and wife battled with breast cancer. Mickelson first learned of his wife having breast cancer and took a few weeks off before competing at the US Open. Shortly after his mother was also unbelievably diagnosed with breast cancer which led to Mickelson's extended time away from the game. Mickelson finished second at that US Open which was the last PGA Tour event that he has competed in. Next week's WGC-Bridgestone Invitational is being played at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.

Phil Mickelson is currently the world's number two ranked golfer behind only the great Tiger Woods. Despite missing so many weeks of golf this year, Mickelson is currently ranked fourth on the money list this year. He has two victories on the year, first winning at the Northern Trust Open and then winning a few weeks later at the WGC-CA Championship. He then had a very emotional run at the US Open ultimately coming up short at the end finishing in a tie for second behind Lucas Glover. Mickelson has played in all ten of the WGC-Bridestone Invitationals with his best finish coming back in 1999 when he tied for second.

When Phil missed this year's British Open Championship it snapped his streak of 61 consecutive major championship appearances. After facing much criticism for not being able to win a major during the early years of his career, Mickelson now has three major championship victories under his belt. He first won the 2004 Masters which put an end to all the talk of him being unable to win a major. The next year he won the 2005 PGA Championship and followed that up with a win at the 2006 Masters. Remarkably Phil has finished in second or tie for second on five different occasions in the US Open. With Mickelson returning to the tour, golfing fans will get a chance to see one of the top golfers of this generation back in action.
