Marlins Pull Off A Last Inning Victory Against The Cubs

Sports Betting News - August 3rd, 2009 - Written by Ryan Smith

Trailing by one run entering the bottom of the 9th inning, the marlins had a surprise for their fans on Family Sunday. Dan Uggla who has started to find his swing late in the season, stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the 9th inning with one out and the bases empty. Trailing by one run the Marlins second baseman gathered himself on a 3-1 count and blasted a hanging braking ball into the upper deck of Land Shark Stadium.

Cody Ross, who already hit a home run earlier in the game to tie the score at 1-1, stepped up to the plate right after Dan Uggla, with a chance to be the hero of the day. Ross took advantage of that chance, smashing the first pitch he saw over the right field wall, wining the game with a solo walk-off home run. It was the second time in three days the Marlins have beat the Chicago Cubs with a walk-off home run, and the Marlins are starting to warm up at the right time.

The Marlins are just 5 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies entering the month of August and only 3 games behind the Rockies and the Giants in the Wild Card. The Marlins will face the Washington Nationals in their next series, and have proven success against the Washington franchise, posting a 9-0 record against the team this year. The Marlins play the Philadelphia Phillies in the fallowing series and a potential winning series against both teams can boost the Marlins even closer to winning their first ever national league East title.

The Marlins have won 7 of their last 10 games, and 9 out of their last 12 games, since starting the second half of the season with three straight losses to the Phillies after the all-star break. The Marlins will have to continue to play well on the road and find away to stay on top of teams early while playing at home. if the Marlins can some how manage to play good baseball in the next month their first division title might have a chance of becoming reality. Though the Phillies have gotten better with left-handed pitcher Cliff Lee, the young marlins could easily sneak into the top spot with just a few games left in the regular season. The Marlins and Phillies had a rain out game in that four game series against the Philadelphia franchise coming out of the all-star break. That game will be made up later on toward the end of the season, this one game could determine which club makes it to the post season. The Marlins have made it to the post season only twice in their brief 16 years in MLB. In both of those trips to the playoffs the Marlins have won World Series titles.
