Greg Norman Struggles on Sunday Shooting a 73

Sports Betting News - August 2nd, 2009 - Written by Bruce

Greg Norman only trailed Fred Funk by one shot heading into the US Senior Open 4th Round on Sunday. After the day was over he finished nine shots behind Funk in a tie for fourth place at -11. Norman was in great position heading into his round with Funk today. The two golfers were within one shot of one another and everything was in place for an exciting final round showdown between two of the biggest Champions Tour stars. Not unlike some of is his previous disappointing Sunday finishes, Norman was unable to keep pace with Funk shooting a one over par 73. Funk shot a brilliant seven under par 65 to beat second place Joey Sindelar by six shots.

While his playing partner Funk was starting off to a fast start Norman was unable to get anything going by parring the first five holes. Then disaster struck on the par 3 6th hole when Norman got a double bogey. On the very next hole he got a bogey five on the par 4 7th hole which left him well behind Funk at -9. Norman had difficulty all afternoon finishing with three bogeys and the double bogey. He found some success with four birdies at the 8th, 11th, 12th, and 15th. He had too many errors which gave him no chance of winning today. Norman is becoming all too accustomed to being in a great position to win a major championship before ultimately coming up short.

As recently as this year's Senior British Open Championship, Norman was leading heading into the final round on Sunday. He struggled in the final round finishing in a tie or sixth place. Norman finished three shots behind the eventual winner Loren Roberts. Norman has had numerous close calls in major championships throughout his career. In 2008 he led the British Open Championship by two strokes after the 3rd Round. This made him the oldest player to ever lead a major championship heading into the final round. He ended up faltering on Sunday finishing in a tie for third. Norman does have two major titles with victories in the 1986 and 1993 British Opens Championships. A good round today may not have been enough as the winner Fred Funk shot a 65 to easily win the championship.
