Battle for Online Gambling Rages On

Gambling News - September 20th, 2009 - Written by Glen

online gamblingWith mere months until the full power of the UIGEA, the battle for online gambling continues. The fight is strong on both sides, and it is still impossible to tell whether or not the games will be regulated by the end of the year, or if the outcome will remain bleak for online gamblers.

The biggest issue in the debate is whether or not gaming can be profitable for the state. Online gambling already sends billions of dollars overseas, which is billions of dollars that can help the US Government's budget crisis. While the economy trembles beneath the overwhelming might of a depression, online gambling, poker in particular, remains a powerful industry who's revenues have not wavered under pressure.

Online poker has been under fire, both domestically and over the Internet, over whether or not the game is one of skill or one of chance. Those who push for chance are trying to keep online poker illegal, though they have been met with heavy opposition. Many groups around the nation, particularly the Poker Player's Alliance, is regularly lobbying for online poker to be completely legalized. The projected came to a head when Senator Menendez of New Jersey announced his online poker regulation bill.

As the clock ticks for online gambling, lobbyists and legislators alike are aiming to increase the odds that the dice will land in favor of online gambling. In the meantime, players will still be entitled to play their games without concern. December marks the full force of the UIGEA, which hovers over online gamblers like a battleship from certain 1970's Science Fiction films by George Lucas. Unfortunately, the issue cannot fully go to Congress, as pressing issues such as health care reform require more attention. Little do they think that the cost to fund state owned health care could be easily paid by online gambling.
