Pujols' 10th Inning Grand Slam Lifts Cardinals Past Mets

Sports Betting News - August 5th, 2009 - Written by Bruce

albert pujolsAlbert Pujols showed yet again last night why he is the most feared hitter in the game today. After going through a recent so called slump, Pujols responded with a huge game which culminated in his 10th inning grand slam that gave the Cardinals a 12-7 win at the Mets. With two outs in the top of the tenth inning Pujols stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and the Cardinals up 8-7. Mets reliever Sean Green got up 0-2 on Pujols before the St. Louis slugger smashed the next pitch over the left field wall for a dramatic grand slam. This gave Pujols his second home run and fifth RBI of the game. He had been 0-13 going into his last night's game. When the night was over, Pujols had recorded his ninth multi home run game of the season and finished an impressive 4-5 from the plate.

The Mets Johan Santana started last night and pitched eight innings for the home team. He gave up five earned runs including a massive home run to straightaway center field against Pujols in the 8th inning. Santana helped the Mets get out to an early lead with his 2nd inning two run double. His season high eight innings kept the Mets in the game, but Pujols was simply too good last night. His 10th inning blast was his fifth grand slam of the season which is only one behind the all time major league record. For the season, Pujols is a remarkable 7-9 with the bases loaded including 24 RBI's. He now has four more home runs this season than anybody else in the major leagues with 36. He also has the most RBI's in the majors with an incredible 97. His .321 average is currently sixth best in the National League which is .019 behind the leader Hanley Ramirez. He still remains very alive to win the triple crown this season.

The win put the Cardinals (59-50) in a tie with the Chicago Cubs for the lead in the National League Central. The Mets (50-56) have dealt with multiple key injuries this season which has really caused them to struggle. They have now lost five out of six games and dropped to ten games back of the National League East leading Philadelphia Phillies. The Cardinals scored eight runs in the last three innings to give them the come from behind victory. In the 9th inning the Mets closer Fransicso Rodriguez gave up his fourth blown save of the season when the Cardinals scored two runs off of him to send the game to extra innings. Joel Piniero got the start for the Cardinals but struggled giving up seven earned runs in only five innings of work. He did not factor in the decision however as Kyle McClellan pitched a scoreless 10th inning to earn the win for Cardinals.
