A Boxed Bet simply means opening more options for a win. It means selecting a group of horses and hoping one of them finishes the way you predict it. There are straight bets that ask the bettor to choose what horse will win a race, or even place or show in the race. Sometimes it will ask the bettor to predict all three, as in a Trifecta. These are very difficult bets and require simple luck more often than skill. Sometimes this can create unwanted stress and anxiety when at the ticket gate, agonizing over which horse to take. Sometimes there is limited information on the horse, which can make for an even longer decision. The answer for this might be a Boxed Bet.

A Boxed Bet is simple. Say you want to pick the winner of Race Three using a Online Racebook. But you can't decide which horse to take, but there are four that you have your eye on. Why not choose all four? Put a bet down that one of those four horses will win the race, and you have a Boxed Bet. This leaves a lot of room for error, and allows the bettor to be wrong on three horses. Only one of those horses has to win. The other three don't matter. They could all stop dead in their tracks halfway through the race and turn around. As long as one of the chosen horses crosses the finish line ahead of all others, a winning ticket is issued.

Picking just the winner in a Boxed Bet is called an Exacta Boxed Bet, but there are other versions. For example, there is a Superfecta Boxed Bet, which requires selecting the first, second, third and fourth finishers of a particular race. This is very difficult, nearly impossible to predict the top-four with complete accuracy, so bettors will chose a Box of horses to allow for more options. When doing this, a bet is placed on, say, five horses. If those five horses result in a 1-2-3-4 finish, in any order, the bettor wins. The catch, however, is that the track will ask for a higher starting wager. A Superfecta usually starts with a $2, and when boxing it, you have to multiply that amount by the number of possible combinations for a win.
