Jeremy Gaubert Claims World Poker Open Title

Poker News - August 12th, 2009 - Written by Bruce

Jeremy Gaubert came in the Wold Poker Open Championship final table with the third smallest chip stack. When the final table play was complete, Gaubert made an impressive comeback and emerged victorious to claim the title. He earned $192,953 for his remarkable effort. On top of that, the win gave Gaubert a seat in the $10,000 entry fee World Poker Tour event which will be held in Biloxi, Mississippi next January. When the remaining nine players began the final table, Gaubert trailed chip leader Chris Moneymaker by 900,000 chips. Moneymaker held a massive chip lead with over 1 million chips, with poker pro Chad Brown sitting with the second largest chip stack of 433,500. These two were by far the two biggest names coming into the final table, and with the two biggest chip stacks it seemed like a tough task for one of the other players to take home the title.

The final table got under way with the short stack Paris Heard being eliminated on the third hand of play. A few hands later Jerry Milanos was eliminated in eighth place when his pocket kings got cracked by pocket tens. The quick eliminations didn't stop there, as a couple hands later Chris Moneymaker eliminated Tommy Vedes in seventh place. Moneymaker flopped a full house with his pocket sevens, which was good enough to send Vedes to the rail. Sixth place finisher Gil George suffered a few heartbreaking losses, capped by his pocket aces being cracked. The next to be elimated was Thomas Creel, as he was sent home in fifth place when his pocket queens lost to the ace king of Steve Hamontree. Chad Brown was the next to go, when he was caught bluffing after missing his flush on the river. After losing a few big pots, former WSOP Main Event champion Chris Moneymaker was eliminated in third place. Jeremy Gaubert caught a flush on the river, which bested the top pair of Moneymaker. This set up a heads up match between Jeremy Gaubert and Steve Hamontree.

Gaubert started the heads up match with 1.5 million chips compared to the 1 million chips of Hamontree. After an hour of back and forth play, the two got all in on a ten high flop. Hamontree had top pair, but he was behind the pocket aces of Gaubert. The turn and river were no help to Hamontree eliminating him in second place. Though he was no doubt disappointed, the $109,400 he won was a great consolation prize. Jeremy Gaubert is 25 year old poker pro from Thibodaux, Louisiana. He had previously chopped the prestigious PokerStars Sunday Million online poker tournament for $233,000. This is the first major live victory of the young poker pros career. Congratulations go out to Jeremy Gaubert on winning the World Poker Open Championship.
