Union Secures 2 Year Contract For Atlantic City Casino Employees

Casino News - November 16th, 2009 - Written by Glen

casino employeesWorkers of all categories in six of Atlantic City's Casinos have had their jobs secured through two year contracts, all made possible by the Local 54 of Unite Here, the largest union for casino workers within the City. Thousands of employees may now have peace of mind through the accord.

Over 5,000 workers, mostly non-gaming workers, have been protected by the contracts. Though a wage freeze will be enacted for the first year, 96% had voted in favor of the contracts.

Strikes had been a cause of concern earlier in the year, mostly with gaming employees, backed by the United Auto Workers.

In the currently rough financial atmosphere, many casinos, particularly those in Atlantic City, have been faced with trying times. The threat of a lost work force could have sent many Atlantic City Casinos over the edge, thus into the abyss of bankrupcty - an abyss into which many casinos are beginning to slip.

While not all of the casinos had agreed to this pact, many of the larger have, including three Trump Casinos and the Tropicana. While the wage freeze will keep employees at a static level of income, this will lapse after two years, thus allowing for hourly wages to increase half way through the contract.

Though important to the employees who have become protected, this contract could have proven to be essential for the survival of many casinos within Atlantic City. Though Atlantic CIty has had its problems, it is doubtful that they will disappear entirely, even from trouble caused by new casinos in Pennsylvania and other surrounding states. In the case of USA Online Casinos, players do not have to worry about losing their comforts of the casino, or indeed their games, due to a strike or bankruptcy.
