Penguins Obliterate Caps

May 14, 2009 - Written By Glen

Despite being labeled the under dogs, the Penguins fought hard for 7 games and came out on top. Game 7 was a pivotal win for the Penguins, crushing the Caps like a wanton buy smashing flies. The final score was Penguins, 6 and Capitals, 2.

The Crosby-Ovechkin connection was brought to a head in the final game of their series. It all started when Penguins Goalie, Marc-Andre Fleury, prevented a close-call goal by Ovechkin early in the first period. It seemed that this block instilled the Penguins with a burning desire to win the game, as it was easier than riding a bike down a hill from there on. Crosby then created a tsunami of trouble for the Caps, scoring the first of two goals within eight seconds. Demoralized, the Capitals began to struggle to keep up.

Crosby, being branded one of the finest players on the ice, is close to breaking a record set by Mario Lemieux, co-owner and former Penguins Center. Lemieux set the record at 16 goals in the post season. Crosby is already at 12.

Defensive wing Sergei Gonchar made a return after suffering several injuries this game. His presence was definitely felt and it was Gonchar who set the works in motion for Crosby to score his two points in eight seconds early on. Sergei missed over four months due to surgery then suffered an injury in Game 4 which left him out of of the following two games. His return in Game 7 was a powerful force for the Capitals to reckon with.

Capitals star forward, Alexander Ovechkin, only scored once the entire final game. He played hard and kept Fleury on his toes, but the loss is one that will not soon be forgotten. Capitals goal keepers, both of them, spent an almost equal amount of time on the ice. They could not keep the Penguins down, however, leading to the ultimate victory for Pittsburgh.

The Penguins will advance to the next round, to face a team that is to-be-determined.
