Churchhill Downs Expands To Miami

June 4, 2009 - Written by Glen

churchilll downsThe race to expand gambling choices within the states, thus increasing state revenue, has taken off with a strong start all across the nation. Kentucky, on the other hand, has showed no signs of expanding their gambling program. Churchill Downs owners are convinced that casino gambling would rescue them from their falling revenues, but how, they might ask, would they legally generate this extra money if they were breaking the law with casino games? They wouldn't. And that is why they have moved to Miami to build a casino on Calder Race Course.

Calder Race Course is owned under the same umbrella corporation that Churchill Downs operates beneath. Calder Race Course is in a different jurisdiction, allowing them to operate the casino games in the state of Florida. They have set the opening date to run in synchronicity with the Super Bowl, which is to be held in the same general area. The idea of this is to get things started with a boom from all the tourists being piped into Florida to see the game.

The biggest competition Calder Race Course will have is the Seminole Hard Rock Casino of Hollywood. The latter is already quite established as a casino and business venture, leaving them with loyal customers that probably won't switch to a new casino. The Calder Race Course will have over 1,200 slots, but it won't have the coveted poker or blackjack games that the Hard Rock has. Still, with the name Churchill Downs associated with Calder Race Course, we might see a new superpower of casino gambling in South Florida.
