World Series of Poker Europe Main Event underway

Poker News - September 27th, 2009 - Written by Glen

europe wsopThe World Series of Poker in Las Vegas may be on hold, but in Europe the game is just getting good. The Main Event, Day 1A, kicked off with some big names involved. There are technically two day ones in this event, and the first of the two only yielded 155 entrants, compared to the thousands of that in Vegas. Regardless, big names and big money gathered around the tables to play poker.

Amongst the A-List was such poker professionals as Doyle Bronson, Mike Matusow, Phil Ivey, the beautiful Vanessa Rousso, Phil Hellmuth, Patrik Antonious, Tom "durrrr" Dwan, and many others. Of these big names, many were eliminated before the end of Day 1a. Ivey busted early, Rousso went a few hours later, Antonious hung up his hat, Dwan was sent to eat desert after dinner, and Hellmuth remains, albeit short stacked. Jeff Lisandro, Doyle Brunson, and Jason Mercier were some of the bigger names advancing to the next round, with Brunson in a solid position.

At the end of Day 1a, only 79 of the 155 remain at the tables. Those moving on from Day 1a will have a short break, to reconvene on Monday for day 2. Day 1B is already underway, bringing names such as Jennifer Harman, Daniel Negreanu, PokerStar's recent WCOOP champion Yevgeni Timoshenko to the tables. This day saw a field of 178, doubling up the original entrants. The event is expected to run a total of six days.

The WSOP-E Main event prompted players to pony up with a buy-in of over £10,000. While this nearly doubles through the USD-GBP conversion rate, online poker rooms such as Full Tilt and PokerStars allow players an opportunity to receive buy-ins, through satellites, for a fraction of the cost. These online poker rooms also offer free money bonuses, giving players a chance to pay for the satellites without even using their own cash.
