Poker News - November 2nd, 2009 - Written by Glen

wsopThe World Series of Poker is always trying to involve fans in the games, and the main event is their crown jewel. The November Nine for the 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event carries some relatively unknown names, especially with the biggest chip leader - An amateur player, professional logger, from Oakland Maryland. Phil Ivey, considered one of the best poker players of all time, may be short stacked, but still remains a fierce competitor at the table. Though Moon holds over 58 million chips, to Ivey's 9,765,000, Ivey is still leading the fan polls in probability to win.

Though it is possible that fans are aiming for Ivey's win due to his burgeoning popularity, he has taken the lead in the poll. The lead is no small feat either, as just over 78% of the voters cast their vote for Ivey. Moon is standing with 6.57% of the votes, with Shulman right behind him with 5.62% of the votes. Eric Buchman stands behind them, running with the vote of 2.34%. Joseph Cada is aiming for his first bracelet, and though the young man has only received 2.18% of the votes. James Akenhead, he with the shortest stack of all, out performed veteran Begleiter in the polls, running with 2.10% of the votes, despite Begleiter's 29 million chips to his 6.8. Antoine Saout and Steven Begleiter are running nearly neck and neck in the polls, with 1.11% and 1.10% respectively. Kevin Schaffel, despite his solid performance in this year's WPT, only received .75% of the votes, placing him at the back of the line in the heart's of the fans.

In under a weeks time, the final table will commence and the players will have their shot at glory, the bracelet, and the top prize of nearly $8 million dollars. The tournament is scheduled to end by November 10th, giving four days of excitement, heat, and luck. There are betting lines for the outcome of the games in the USA online sportsbooks, and those odds speak a different truth. Phil Ivey may be a top contender in such sportsbooks as Ivey's odds rest at +450, or third most favored, while Moon is favored to win at +250.

Though most of these players have never had to contend with one another, many have expressed concern over some of their opponents. Darvin Moon, current chip leader, has expressed apprenshension over playing against Ivey in several interviews, and has also stated that he wants nothing more to have fun playing poker. Regardless of why he joined up, he may become the world's next big winner, reminiscient of Chris Moneymaker's 2003 victory in the Main Event.
