Knowing how to play video poker is one thing, but knowing the terminology is something altogether different. It is very important to know your video poker glossary in order to understand all the rules and choose a strategy. These are some of the most used terms you will find in a video poker glossary:

Action: This refers to the total amounts of money that is placed in the game.

Bankroll: The amount of money that a player has to play with.

Bonus poker: Similar to Jacks or Better, but with slight variations.

Carousel: Several video poker machines linked to a progressive jackpot.

Coin: This refers to a single minimum bet.

Comps: This is short for “complimentary” and refers to anything free that an online casino gives to casino members.

Deuces Wild: A version of video poker where the 2s act as Jokers.

Expert play: This is the perfect strategic way to play according to the video poker odds.

Face card: Jack, Queen or King.

Full pay: Video poker machines that offer 9:1 on a Full House and 6:1 on a Flush – also called 9/6 machines.

House edge: This is the casino’s advantage (mathematically) over the players as a way of ensuring a profit for the casino.

Inside straight: This is a poker hand that can be completed by landing one more card within a sequence to complete a Straight.

Joker poker: This game functions off the same rules as Jacks or Better but has a Joker in the deck added in.

Outside straight: Just like an Inside Straight, but with a card on the outside on the outside of the sequence needed to complete the 5 card sequence.

Pay table: This is the most important part of video poker glossary and refers to how much the computer will pay out for a winning hand as per poker hands.

Progressive jackpot: A series of video poker machines banded together where a percentage of each bet wagered is garnished to feed the total jackpot.

Rank: Starting from 2 all the way through to Ace – this is the hierarchy of the poker cards.

RNG: This is a random number generator that allows for fair play and also keeps to the casino’s house edge.

Short pay: Any Jacks or Better video poker machine which does not pay 9/6 is considered a short pay machine – these machines can often be as low as 6/5.

Wild card: This is ultimately a card that acts as a Joker and can be substituted for any other card value.

The more you play video poker, the easier it will be to understand these terms. If you wish you can print out this list of video poker tips and stick it up next to your computer to ensure that you are not left confused when you come across a certain term you may not understand at USA casinos. Even if you are a seasoned video poker player, there is no harm in refreshing your video poker glossary once in a while.
