Seattle Seahawks Defeat San Diego Chargers 27-20

September 26th, 2010-  By Alex Groberman

Behind a pair of Leon Washington kickoff returns for touchdowns, the Seattle Seahawks were able to hold off the San Diego Chargers 27-20 at Qwest Field.

Washington rushed for a team-record 101 yard run in the third quarter of the Seahawks victoryto assist a 19-32 220 yard and a touchdown effort by quarterback, Matt Hasselbeck. The defense also played a key role in Seattle’s victory, though as they came with five forced turnovers two of which were interceptions by rookie, Earl Thomas. His first interception of the day ultimately led to kicker, Olindo Mare putting a 23-yard field goal through the uprights with 11:27 reminaing in the fourth quarter. Thomas’ final pick came in the waning seconds of the game at the Seattle 10-yard line.

On the other side, quarterback, Philip Rivers threw for a career-high 455 yards for the Chargers en route to a 29-53, two touchdown and two interception performance. Tight end, Antonio Gates helped out with seven receptions for 109 yards and a touchdown but couldn’t make the necessary plays with the clock winding down and the team desperately needing a touchdown.

The Chargers’ Pro Bowl linebacker, Shawne Merriman got taken out of the game early with a calf injury.

San Diego was able to overcome two penalties to ultimately tie the game after Rivers put together a nine-play, 65 yard drive that he wrapped up with a 12-yard TD to Gates. The reception came after holding call and an out of bounds play and led to a two point conversion.

The Seahawks played particularly impressively coming off a disappointing Week 2 showing. The problem, however, is that if Washington’s return game was not so vastly superior to the Chargers’ special teams, the Seahawks running attack would have been no match for the San Diego defense. It will be interesting to see how the Seattle offense
develops in coming weeks.

The Chargers were set as a 3.5 favorite in this one on USA Online Sportsbooks and NFL Weekly Betting Lines, with the Seahawks covering the line and winning the game.  Theover/under for the contest was set at 44 points, taking the over by three.

i think Seattle had a lot of luck on their side. Matt did not play all that well. defense played well. i would think the offense will need to do much better if we are to continue to win. jim
