Week 3 NFL Matchup: AFC & NFC West Teams Collide As Chargers (-5.5) Face Seahawks

September 24th, 2010 – by Alex

The Seattle Seahawks (1-1) will host the San Diego Chargers (1-1) this Sunday in Week 3 action for between the NFC West and AFC West. This game is slated to kickoff on Sunday at 4:15pm EST and will be televised on CBS and DirecTV channel 717.

The Seahawks kicked their season off looking very strong in their first game of the season against the San Francisco 49ers. However, despite the impressive debut, Pete Carroll’s Seahawks massively regressed against the Denver Broncos in Week 2 action.

The Seattle offense looked extremely pedestrian against a Broncos unit that was the beneficiary of two penalties and a turnover in the red zone early on. Quarterback, Matt Hasselbeck continued to be unimpressive putting up 233 yards on the day along with three interceptions. Justin Forsett didn’t do much damage on the ground to assist the aerial attack en route to an eight carry, 44 yard performance. Deon Butler and John Carlson each caught five passes, however, they didn’t translate into the box score as the Seahawks still got blown out by Denver.

The Seahawks will need to step up big time in order to knock off the Chargers who appear to be regaining the form everyone expected them to have in the preseason. To pull off the upset, Seattle will need Hasselbeck to limit his turnovers and the running attack to get going, otherwise it will be a long day for Carrol’s bunch.

The Chargers proved to be the ying to the Seahawks’ yang as they bounced back from a disappointing Week 1 performance against the Kansas City Chiefs to absolutely decimate the Jacksonville Jaguars. Quarterback, Philip Rivers threw for a total of 334 yards and three touchdowns en route to what would have been an impressive performance had he not gotten picked off twice. Running back, Michael Tolbert rushed for 82 yards and two touchdowns to give a much-needed boost to the Chargers’ run game that desperately needed some help. Receiver, Malcom Floyd caught three passes for 95 yards while tight end, Antonio Gates came through with two touchdowns on five passes.

On the other side, Antoine Carson led the way with two interceptions while Brandon Siler and Kevin Burnett each had one. Meanwhile, Jacques Cesaire pitched in a sack, while Eric Weddle and Larry English each had half a sack.

The Chargers shouldn’t have much trouble with the still-growing Seahawks as long as Rivers keeps his interceptions at a minimum and the running game grows off their Week 2 effort. Defensively, the Chargers are solid, and they should be able to give a very mediocre Seattle offense a lot of trouble.
