Week 3 NFL Matchup: Upstart Chiefs To Host Winless San Francisco 49ers; K.C. 3 Point Dogs

September 24th, 2010 – by Alex

The Kansas City Chiefs (2-0), one of the more pleasant surprises of this young 2010-11 NFL season, will host the winless San Francisco 49ers (0-2) this coming Sunday. This game will kickoff at 1pm EST, 10am Pacific from Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. Coverage of this game will be available on FOX and DirecTV channel 710.

While many were quick to write them off during the preseason, the Chiefs have turned a few heads en route to their 2-0 total thus far in the year. Coming off a particularly impressive victory over the San Diego Chargers to kick off the year, the Chiefs followed that masterful performance up with a “W” over the Cleveland Browns last week. Despite trailing at the half against Cleveland, Kansas City came back behind a strong defensive effort and two field goals to come out with a victory.

Quarterback, Matt Cassel continued his run of mediocrity throwing for 176 yards and two interceptions, but he got a bit of help from his running game. Thomas Jones and Jamaal Charles ended up rushing for 83 and 49 yards, respectively, as the offense played quietly all game long. Tony Moeaki proved to get the most looks from Cassel as he caught five of the 10 passes thrown his way. Receiver, Dwayne Bowe also did his part with four catches.

The game ended up turning for Kansas City on an interception return for a touchdown by Brandon Flowers which proved to be the team’s only TD on the day. Kicker, Ryan Succop provided the remainder of the scoring power for the group en route to nine points on three field goals for the day. Eric Berry and Derrick Johnson led the team with seven tackles apiece.

While the Chiefs’ win total is no doubt impressive, their offense must pick up. The defense has been carrying the squad thus far in the season, and this cannot continue considering the level of opponents that Kansas City will see later in the season. In the coming week, however, against an equally unimpressive 49ers offense, the Chiefs should continue to be dominant.

On the flip side of the coin, the 49ers have been very disappointing in the new year. After being completely destroyed by rival Seattle Seahawks in their first game, the Niners played a somewhat competitive game against the defending champion New Orleans Saints last Monday.

Offensively, San Francisco is struggling and it doesn’t seem like their troubles will end any time soon. Quarterback, Alex Smith has had four interceptions and a mere one touchdown thus far in the year. Running back, Frank Gore, after being completely ineffective in the team’s first game came through with an impressive 112 yards and a touchdown this past Monday. Tight end, Vernon Davis had four catches for 78 yards against the Saints, while Josh Morgan chipped in with six catches.

Defensively the Niners have been solid behind Patrick Willis who had eight tackles and a sack against the Saints. Ahmed Brooks also had a sack as Takeo Spikes and Justin Smith chipped in five tackles apiece. Good defense will be key to the team’s success in the coming game because the Chiefs have already proven themselves incapable of having a fired up offensive attack. As long as the Niners don’t allow Cassel to explode for his first strong game of the season, the Niners have a chance in this one.

Game Lines: NFL oddsmakers currently have the Chiefs as a 3 point underdog approaching this contest. Additionally, NFL Week 3 Betting Odds also show that the over/under on this match has been set at a total of 36.5 points.

NFL ATS Betting Trends: The Chiefs are 4-0 ATS in their last four games and 1-4 ATS in their last five home games against a team with a losing road record. Meanwhile, the Niners are 9-2-2 ATS against teams with a winning record, and 4-0-1 ATS following losses.

NFL Straight Up Betting Trends: In their last 8 games on the road, the San Francisco 49ers are just 1-7 straight up. Despite those bad numbers, the Chiefs are riding their own unfavorable NFL Betting Trends ranging back into last season. K.C. is just 6-16 in their last 22 games which includes 2-13 in their last 15 games at Arrowhead.

Over/Under Betting Trends: In this Week 3 NFL Matchup, trends for the over/under are point to the under even though the total is just 36.5 points. The under is 3-0-1 in the 49ers last four road games and is 6-1-1 in the last eight overall. Other hot trends pointing to under in this game would be a 4-1 mark in the Chiefs last 5 games as an underdog as well as 4-0 in the last 4 games as an underdog of .5-3.0 points.
