Matt Schaub Shines In Texans OT Win Over Redskins

September 19th, 2010-  By Alex Groberman

In one of the most interesting games of the weekend, the Houston Texans defeated the Washington Redskins 30-27 off a 35-yard Neil Rackers field goal with 3:24 remaining in overtime.

Texans quarterback, Matt Schaub was particularly impressive in a 497 yard, 38-52 performance. On the game winning drive, he moved Houston 41 yards on seven plays that was highlighted by a Joel Dreesen 28-yard reception which set up Neil Rackers’ kick. Receiver, Andre Johnson was also key in the Texans overcoming a 27-10 third quarter deficit with 158 yards, a touchdown and 12 receptions for the day.

Kevin Walters also did his part with 11 catches for 144 yards and a touchdown. Running back, Arian Foster rushed for 69 yards on 19 carries and caught three passes for 69 yards.

On the other side of the field, quarterback, Donovan McNabb completed 28-38 passes for 426 yards and one touchdown. McNabb hit all of his favorite targets (Joey Galloway, Fred Davis and Chris Cooley) on his way to a masterful passing performance.

Despite a great statistical performance, however, McNabb’s team ended up facing the consequences of several key bad breaks. Late in overtime, the Redskins drove the ball to the Houston 34 yard line and went for the field goal. While kicker Graham Gano knocked his attempt home, the Texans called a timeout prior to the kick and the Redskins were forced to re-kick. Gano’s second attempt was wide right, which brought the ball back to the Texans and eventually cost Washington the game.

The Redskins had a chance at the end of the fourth to take a 30-20 lead, however, Bernard Pollard blocked Gano’s 29-yard field goal attempt that ended up keeping the Texans within a touchdown. Schaub then took his team on a successful scoring drive that he capped off with a 29-yard pass to Johnson.

This game marked the first time since 1994 that two quarterbacks threw for 400 yards in an NFL game.

Entering the game, Houston was set as a 2 1/2 point favorite on USA Online Sportsbooks and NFL Weekly Betting Lines, and squeaked out a cover ATS.  With the game’s total reaching 57 points, it cleared the established over/under of 43 prior to kickoff.

The Texans square off against the Dallas Cowboys next week while the Redskins will seek their second victory of the season against the St. Louis Rams.
