NFL Week 2 Recaps: Jets Take Down AFC East Rival Patriots 28-14

September 19th, 2010-  By Alex Groberman

Taking full advantage of their shot at redemption, the New York Jets defeated the New England Patriots 28-14 on Sunday.

Jets quarterback, Mark Sanchez, threw a career-high three touchdown passes on a 21-30, 220 yard performance. When all was said and done, Sanchez had linked up with Braylon Edwards, Jericho Crotchery and Dustin Keller for scores. Crotchery’s 2-yard touchdown reception from Sanchez came with 38 seconds remaining in the third quarter, and Edwards ended up catching the 2-point conversation from that to give the Jets their first lead of the game. Running back, LaDanian Tomlinson finished a particularly impressive day with a 31-yard run that put the perfect cap on his first 100+ yard performance of the season.

The Jets defense was equally as impressive as showcased when Antonio Cromartie picked off Tom Brady’s attempted pass to Randy Moss on the 3-yard line. This was subsequently followed with Sanchez leading a 10-play scoring drive that was capped off by a Nick Folk 36-yard field goal. Originally, Folk kicked a 49-yard field goal to end the first half and bring the Jets to within four at 14-10.

The victory was one that the Jets desperately needed coming off a week that included investigations by the league for their treatment of female reporter, Ines Sainz, and a disappointing first week performance against the Baltimore Ravens. The win came at a cost, however, when cornerback, Darrelle Revis had to leave the game after an awkward landing while he attempted to intercept a Moss 34-yard touchdown catch.

On the Patriots side, quarterback, Brady finished with 248 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Receiver, Moss, appeared extra motivated after Revis called him a “slouch” last January and made a fairly incredible catch in front of the cornerback to get his 150th career touchdown. The reception came after Brady connected with Aaron Hernandez on a third and 10 play that put the Patriots within great position for a touchdown. Brady’s favorite target, Wes Welker, came off a 15-catch Week 1 performance with six catches, 38 yards and a touchdown.

USA Online Sportsbooks and NFL Weekly Betting Lines set the Patriots as a three-point favorite in this one, but the underdog Jets proved oddsmakers wrong with their two-touchdown winning margin.  The game also went the over with the total of 42 points, just over the established line at 39 1/2 points.

The Jets will meet the hot Miami Dolphins next week while the Patriots will shoot for a 2-1 season record in their next game against the Buffalo Bills.
