San Diego Chargers Dominate Jacksonville Jaguars In 38-13 Win

September 19th, 2010-  By Alex Groberman

It was over early as the San Diego Chargers absolutely dominated the Jacksonville Jaguars 38-13 in their home opener on Sunday.

Chargers quarterback, Philip Rivers, was particularly impressive with a 334 yard three touchdown showing. Rivers ended up throwing touchdown passes of nine and four yards to tight end, Antonio Gates
in the first half, and then a 54-yarder to receiver, Malcom Floyd, in the fourth quarter. Michael Tolbert ended up scoring on rushes of two and one yards.

Running back, Ryan Matthews hurt his ankle in the second quarter of the game and did not return. Prior to the injury, he fumbled the ball for the second straight game in what ended up being one of three San Diego turnovers.

At one point very early in the game, Rivers got his team 74 yards down the field in six plays that got topped off with Tolbert’s 2-yard run.

Antoine Carson had two interceptions on the day for the Chargers, while Brandon Siler and Kevin Burnett each had one. Carson also forced a fumble, as did Antwan Applwhite.

The strong offensive and defensive performance by the Chargers came as a direct response to their disappointing 21-14 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs last Monday.

Meanwhile, the Jaguars appeared to regress from their first-game victory over the Denver Broncos in a very poor showing. Quarterback, David Garrard ended up throwing for four interceptions on the day. The six turnovers by the team led to an eventual 17 points for San Diego.

The Jags got their only touchdown of the game with 37 seconds left to play on a 3-yard pass from Garrard. Kicker, Josh Scobee was the Jaguars’ player of the game kicking field goals of 44 and 48 yards. The first kick was set up by a Matthews fumble while the second one came off a blocked punt by Rashad Jennings.

At one point in the game, Garrard’s backup Luke McCown was brought in. However, after McCown was shaken up in the fourth quarter, Garrard was brought back in.

USA Online Sportsbooks and NFL Weekly Betting Lines installed the Chargers as a seven-point favorite to win this one, as San Diego easily covered.  The game also went the over, as the 51 points scored between the two teams exceeded the established 45 1/2-point line prior to kickoff.

The Chargers will play the Seattle Seahawks next week while the Jaguars will try to redeem themselves against the Philadelphia Eagles.
