Philadelphia’s Michael Vick Gets First Start Since 2006 Sunday Against Detroit

September 18, 2010 – By Scott

It has been since 2006 since Michael Vick has started a game in the NFL. The Philadelphia Eagles took a chance on the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback after he was released from jail for his involvement in dog fighting.

Vick will have an opportunity to take the helm on Sunday as the Eagles face the Detroit Lions. Starting quarterback Kevin Kolb went down with a concussion in their season opener with the Green Bay Packers and will not be available on Sunday, allowing Vick to get the start. Despite getting the start due to an injury, Vick is excited about his chance against the Lions.

“It would be gratifying,” Vick said of leading the Eagles to a win. “This team took a chance on me when not many others would.”

Vick missed the entire 2007 and 2008 seasons after serving time in jail. The Eagles signed him last preseason but he had to serve a four-game suspension last year. After serving his suspension, he played in all of the remaining 12 games primarily in a wildcat formation. He ended up the season completing 6 of 13 passes for 86 yards and one touchdown.

Vick came into their game last weekend in the second half and looked as if he had not missed a beat. The Eagles were trailing 20-3 at halftime, but Vick rallied his team and got within a touchdown before their last drive was halted after failing to convert on fourth-and-one. He finished the game completing 16 of 24 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 103 yards. Head coach Andy Reid knows he has gotten adjusted to the speed of the game after so much time off.

“Michael is excited to step in and play,” Reid said. “As we all know, he was one of the great quarterbacks in the league before he was incarcerated.

“He did a great job of getting back into shape, that’s number one. Then, the speed of the game — you’re talking about a guy who was one of the fastest players in the game and he was stumbling a little last preseason. Then you look last Sunday and he was as fast as he was. He not only ran for 100 yards, but he also threw the ball well.”

The Eagles will enter their game Sunday as 6 1/2 point favorites against Detroit according to NFL sportsbooks. Vick downplays all the hype about this being his first start in quite some time and knows what needs to be done on Sunday.

“This is a big game,” Vick said. “It’s not about me making my first start or none of that. I’ve put all of that aside. It’s about us going on the road and trying to get a win. We need to go out there and get a win, that’s what matters. Nobody wants to be 0-2.”
