Sunday Night Football: Peyton’s Colts Favored By 5 Over Eli’s Giants In “Manning Bowl II”

September 18th, 2010 –  by Alex

In one of the most highly anticipated match-ups of the season, the New York Giants (1-0)  will square off against the Indianapolis Colts (0-1)  in what has officially been dubbed “Manning Bowl II.”   This game will be played on Sunday Night Football at approximately 8:20pm EST, coming live from Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium. Coverage will be exclusively on NBC.

In their first game of the season, the Giants looked particularly impressive against the Carolina Panthers. Eli Manning threw a total of three touchdown passes and totaled up 263 yards. The younger Manning got a lot of help from his receivers, in particular Hakeem Nicks who finished the day with three touchdown receptions and 75 yards. Running back, Ahmad Bradshaw did his part with 20 carries for 76 yards.

While Eli’s play will be key against the Colts, look for the defense to play a particularly big role in the Giants’ success. Justin Tuck and Mathius Kiwanuka will get the always-difficult task of trying to rush Peyton Manning. Meanwhile, the secondary will really have to buckle down because Peyton Manning will surely find ways to put the ball in the air.

The Colts on the other hand are coming off a very disappointing loss to the Houston Texans in Week 1. The team was unable to get the ball downfield for a large part of the second half, and when they finally accomplished the feat, Austin Collie fumbled the ball right as the squad was getting ready to make a comeback. Quarterback, Peyton Manning threw the ball for 433 yards and three touchdowns, however, poor defensive play nullified the elder Manning’s stellar performance.

Look for the Colts to continue doing what they do – letting Peyton Manning win the game for them. Offensively they’ll hope that their future hall of fame quarterback will be able to keep the Giants’ secondary on their toes, and utilize all of the receiving options he has at his disposal. Meanwhile, the Colts defense will attempt to rattle the younger Manning, and force the Giants defense to be far less effective than they were in their first showing of the season.

Game Lines: Like many other teams that lost their opener, the Indianapolis Colts come into this game against the Giants as 5 point favorites. Part of the reasoning behind that is the game being in Indianapolis however that is never worth more than three points. Online Sportsbooks truly believe the Colts to be the better team. One thing is certain, the Colts definitely don’t want to drop to 0-2 because as we all know, the percentage of teams making the playoffs after an 0-2 start is very small.

As for the over/under, oddsmakers predict a lot of points looking at the NFL Week 2 Betting Lines. Currently, Las Vegas sees a total of 48.5 points being the deciding mark in this game.

NFL Against The Spread Betting Trends: The Giants are 7-1 against the spread in their last 8 games on field turf, and 23-8 against the spread in their last 31 road games. Despite those good numbers, beware that the Giants are just 3-9 against the spread in their last 12 games.

On the other side of the ball, the Colts are 5-1-1 ATS in their last 7 against teams with a winning record as well as 4-1-1 ATS on their last 6 played on field turf. Like the Giants, not all NFL Betting Trends are good for the Colts. Following a loss, the Colts are just 1-5 in the last 6 games within that scenario.

NFL Over/Under Betting Trends: In looking at the over/under trends, things are definitely looking good for the over department. The over has hit in the last 6 games the Giants have played. For the Colts, the over has hit in 6 of their last 8 games.

NFL Straight Up Betting Trends: The New York Giants are just 4-8 straight up in their last 12 games, including last week’s win. In addition, the Giants are just 1-4 straight up in their last 5 road games.

The Indianapolis Colts have been terrific over their last 20 games despite losing last week. In those 20 games, the Colts are 16-4 straight up however over the the last 6 games, those numbers drop to 2-4 straight up.
