Underdog Houston Takes Down Indianapolis 34-24

September 12,  2010 – By Scott

The Houston Texans entered their first game of the 2010 NFL Season as a 2-point underdog to the Indianapolis Colts according to NFL sportsbooks. The Texans, one of the top passing teams in the NFL a year ago, showed a totally different attack as they gained 257 yards on the ground and defeated the Colts 34-24. Bettors who took the Over in this matchup came out in good shape as the over/under was set at 48 heading into the game.

The problem for Indianapolis was Houston running back Arian Foster. Foster rushed for 231 yards and three touchdowns in the win. The Colts out-gained the Texans by over 100 yards, but a lack of a rushing attack did not help in the cause, as well as finding an answer for Foster.

Texans quarterback Matt Shaubb attempted just 17 passes and finished with just 107 yards and 1 touchdown in the game. Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning passed for 419 yards and 3 touchdowns in the loss. Joseph Addai had all of the Colts’ 44 rushing yards.

The Texans jumped out to a 6-0 first quarter lead as Neil Rackers connected on field goals from 30 and 39 yards. They would add to their lead early in the second as Shaubb found Kevin Walter for a 22-yard touchdown pass and gave Houston a 13-0 lead. But Manning would rally his team back and found Reggie Wayne for a 14-yard touchdown pass. Then with 18 seconds left to go in the half, Adam Vinatieri would nail a 20-yard field goal to cut the Texans lead to 3 heading into halftime.

The Texans would strike first in the second half as Dall Foster scored on a 1-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter to put Houston ahead 20-10. The Texans carried this lead into the fourth quarter and then added to it midway through as Foster found the end zone for the second time on a 25-yard run that extended the Texans lead to 17 points. But Manning would cut the lead back to 10 with 4:54 remaining as he found Dallas Clark on a 10-yard touchdown pass. The points kept coming in the fourth as Foster found the end zone for the third time on 8-yard touchdown run that put Houston back up by 17 and putting the game out of reach for Indianapolis. Manning would find Austin Collie on a 73-yard touchdown pass to bring them back within 10 on the final score of the game.

Indianapolis will look to rebound in Week 2 as they host the New York Giants next weekend. Houston will travel to play at the Washington Redskins.
