San Fransisco 49ers Run Away With Preseason Opener Against Indianapolis Colts

August 16th, 2010-  By Bryan Cross

Peyton Manning played only a few series in the Indianapolis Colts’ Preseason Opener against the San Fransisco 49ers as the Colts jumped up early. Then, in came the back ups looking to get some playing time prior to the start of the regular season, and it was a much different story.

The reigning NFL MVP needed just 16 plays to put up 10 points and give the Colts a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, but that was not enough to the Colts to get a win as the 49ers defeated Indianapolis 37-17, courtesy of three interceptions by Indianapolis back up Curtis Painter.

It was all Colts in the first quarter, as both sides of the ball kept San Fransisco in check.

San Fransisco quarterback Alex Smith completed three of nine passes for 37 yards and an interception in the first quarter of the game.  The 49ers will ask a lot of their young quarterback this season, looking at the San Fransisco 49ers Team Preview

After the opening quarter, it was a completely different game as Painter stepped in and did not play as well as the team would have liked to see.  But then again, it was only the first game of the preseason.

“I think he didn’t play as well as he’d like to, but he needed some help, too,” remarked Indianapolis head coach Jim Caldwell regarding his back up quarterback. “The things that are hidden, dropped passes, the things you need to extend drives, you need guys to do their jobs and we certainly didn’t play as well as we wanted.”

The Colts historically have not played starters much in the preseason, relying instead on the practices and film studying that takes place in the off season and at training camp.

In total, six starters did not even see the playing field against the 49ers.

The 49ers used a 20-point second quarter to over take the Indianapolis lead and never looked backed, as the defense did not allow a point until the 11-minute mark in the fourth quarter.

“I thought we were tough physically and mentally and we ran to the ball,” said San Fransisco coach Mike Singletary after the game. “I thought the guys did a good job overall.”

Entering the game, the 49ers were installed by USA Online Sportsbooks as a three-point favorite to defeat the Colts, and covered easily by virtue of their 20-point win.
