Baltimore Ravens A Decided Favorite Against Carolina Panthers Despite Depleted Secondary

August 10th, 2010-  Written By Alex

The Carolina Panthers will square off against the Baltimore Ravens to open the 2010 preseason for both teams on Thursday at the M&T Bank Stadium. Coming off a strong performance in 2008, the Carolina Panthers regressed to the tune of an 8-8 season and third place in the NFC South in 2009.

By the same token, the Baltimore Ravens are coming off a season with a lot of ebbs and curves en route to a 9-7 finish that included opening with three straight victories, then three straight losses and finally alternated wins and losses for the duration of the season. In the NFL Playoffs, the Ravens beat the New England Patriots in the Wild Card round, but ultimately fell to the Indianapolis Colts in the divisional round.

Looking ahead at this 2010 NFL Pre-season Week One match up, oddsmakers have established the Ravens as three-point favorites to take care of the Panthers in this exhibition.  The over/under for the contest is sitting at 34 points on USA Online Sportsbooks.

The Baltimore Ravens will take on the Panthers’ defense with a refurbished offense that they hope will be enough to take them all the way in 2010. Over the summer the team got receiver, Anquan Boldin who they hope will be able to attack opposing corners all season long. Boldin, combined with tight end, Todd Heap, receiver Donte Stollworth and former QB Troy Smith, give the Ravens a lot of options for young Joe Flacco to throw to. Also easing the quarterback’s workload will be running backs Willis McGahee and Ray Rice.

Defensively, the 2010 Carolina Panthers Preview reveals that the team has a lot of question marks. With that said, there is no better testing ground of defensive players than against the likes of Flacco and Boldin, a QB-receiver tandem looking to get used to one another. The team will be without Julius Peppers who they lost during the offseason, however, they hope that linebackers Jon Beason and Thomas Davis will be able to anchor their unit in the 2010 NFL Season. Look for the Panthers’ defense to really get after Flacco to start the game.

The Panthers’ offensive group is depleted, to say the least. With quarterback Jake Delhomme out, and new quarterback Matt Moore in, the Panthers will no doubt be eager to see how their new QB does against a tough defensive team like the Ravens. Expect to see Jimmy Clausen, Tony Pike and Hunter Cantell all get snaps in this game. Further, because running back Jonathan Stewart isn’t expected to play, Tyrell Sutton and Josh Vaughn should all see plenty of action. Steve Smith will also be out against the Ravens.

Taking on that Panthers’ offense will be the seasoned Ravens defensive group. With Ray Lewis anchoring the unit, the Ravens defense combines the perfect mix of young and old talent. While Terrence Cody came into training camp in relatively poor shape, look for him to get fit quick, and utilize his size and strength against a weak Panthers line. Being that it is a preseason game, expect to see increased playing time for players like Antwan Barnes, Albert McLellan, Jason Phillips, Prescott Burgess, and Edgar Jones who don’t generally get starters’ minutes.

From a special teams standpoint, the Panthers tried to better themselves this offseason by bringing in Wallace Wright, Aaron Francisco and Marcus Hudson to help boost the defense against the opponents return game. It will be interesting to see how effective they will be against the Ravens’ Jaren Parmele.

Our apologies. We were unaware that Davis had to have a second surgery in June to repair a torn right ACL after re-injuring the knee back in June during non-contact drills.
