MLS All Stars With Something To Prove Against Manchester United

July 28, 2010- By Jonathan Lowell

This year, the MLS All Star game offers another exciting attraction from overseas. The Manchester United Red Devils will take the field against the best talent featured in the MLS in 2010. Sportsbooks that accept USA players are sure to feature odds for the game.

The MLS All Stars have faced teams from the English Premier League in the past, but none with more global popularity than Man U. United struggled recently in an exhibition with the Kansas City Wizards, and look for revenge in the last stop on  their United States tour.

Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando has other plans for the Red Devils. He knows that a victory against the most popular sporting franchise in the world will put the MLS on the global map, at least for now.

“It’s a game where we’re representing MLS and our club,” said Rimando. “We want to put MLS on the map, so we want to come out and beat these teams. I think that’s where the competitive nature comes off with being an American and being an American league where we want to win every game.”

United are in pre-season form, while the MLS players have endured a half season already. Sir Alex Ferguson will surely focus on fitness, and avoiding injury. He will also get to take a look at one of his biggest off-season signings.

Mexican international Javier Hernandez will likely make an appearance for United at striker. The 22-year old scored twice for Mexico at the World Cup this summer, and looks to impress Ferguson. He is the first Mexican player to ever play in a Red Devils jersey.

The son of Mexican legend Chicharo, Hernandez was dubbed Chicharito (little pea) by soccer fans. He has earned so much respect by his performance in the World Cup that his name has been elevated to Chicharo, just like his father.

Fans began lining up at 7 a.m. in the autograph line to see Hernandez. Ferguson says he will most likely come off the bench, and wants to make his transition to the highest level of professional soccer as smooth as possible.

“We’d like to use him part of the game,” Ferguson said. “We’re trying to integrate him into the team as quickly as possible. … But we want to have a chat with him to see what he’s been doing physically, because I don’t think it would be wise to play him without any physical preparation.”

Leading the way for the MLS All Stars will be Los Angeles Galaxy strikers Landon Dovoan and Edson Buddle. Donovan had an impressive World Cup by saving the ‘Yanks from elimination in a dramatic game against Algeria. Though the All Stars field an impressive lineup, USA friendly sportsbooks will not necessarily favor them.

Buddle is a rising star in the MLS and with the U.S. National Team. Buddle has the overwhelming majority of the Galaxy goals this season with 12. All star manager Bruce Arena has the challenge of fielding the best team without wearing out stars from around the league.

The Red Devils are dealing with fitness issues of their own. Midfielder Darren Fletcher, and defender John O’Shea may be scratched due to unspecified health problems.

USA sportsbooks have set the MLS All Stars as the underdog at +300. The Red Devils are favored at -130.
