New York Jets Join Teams Looking To Sign Terrell Owens

July 27, 2010- By Jonathan Lowell

One of the premier wide receivers in the NFL is still searching for a home with a new team before the 2010 season. Several teams have been rumored to be among the suitors after Owens. The St. Louis Rams, Cincinnati Bengals, and now the New York Jets are teams that could benefit from the talents of a Pro Bowl wide receiver.

Owens’ agent, Drew Rosenhaus, got a phone call from the Jets recently, but has debated bringing Owens into the most volatile media market in the country.

A deal between the two parties is still a long shot. A source estimated the chances of an agreement being reached at 20 percent. 2010 NFL betting odds would surely increase in the Jets’ favor if Owens were to join the team.

The Jets also contacted former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell about playing for their team.  Russell was subsequently arrested for possession of a controlled substance, and no deal was reached.

Jets coach Rex Ryan is known to be making a strong push for the Super Bowl this season. Ryan will bring in any player that will help the team finish better than the loss they suffered in the AFC championship game against the Indianapolis Colts.

The Cincinnati Bengals are still the favorite to sign Owens, though head coach Marvin Lewis has told reporters that he is satisfied with the quarterbacks already on the roster.

“We’ve been down that road. I don’t have a concern that we need to add anybody (at receiver),” Lewis said.

2010 NFL betting trends are sure to increase in the favor of any team that signs Owens, who remains an offensive threat.

Owens is determined to go to a Super Bowl contender, and says he will not be a distraction off the field.

“It has to be the right situation for me,” Owens said. “I’m going in on my 15th season, so I want to go to a team that’s on the cusp of making it to the playoffs and really having a team really want me and feel that I can come in and be an asset to their ballclub.”

Owens has been working out independently this offseason. Should a team be interested in his talents, he maintains he will be ready to start the 2010 season.

“Other than that, I’m still working out and keeping myself in shape, and I’ll be ready,” Owens added.

Super Bowl XLV odds have set the Jets among the underdogs to win the game at +1200, the Bengals at +2500. The team that selects Owens should see their Super Bowl line become more favorable.
