St. Louis Rams Getting Serious About Terrell Owens

July 25, 2010 – By Scott

The St. Louis Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals seem to be the two NFL teams who have wide receiver Terrell Owens on their watch list. As of Sunday morning, it appears as though the Rams are the team that is most interested according to sources close to the player and the team.

The Rams have reportedly approached Owens through his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, and that despite the fact that they are not a serious playoff contender, wondered if he would be take serious interest in a contract proposal.

St. Louis is facing the 2010 NFL season with a very young wide receiver group. The addition of Owens could possibly take the heat off of those receivers who include Donnie Avery, Laurent Robinson and rookie Mardy Gilyard. More importantly, his addition could in fact loosen up defenses and detour them away from focusing on their running game and Steven Jackson. One source says that this is the reason why the Rams have become so aggressive in their pursuit of Owens.

As reported by ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, the Bengals have also been engaged in talks with Owens. According to a team source, the arrival of free-agent Antonio Bryant hasn’t panned out as expected. Bryant has struggled so far during the offseason and this is a possible reason for their interest in the controversial wide receiver.

Cincinnati does want to pay close attention to their young wide receivers during preseason and they will have five games to do this. They will also need some of those receivers to play on special teams. But Bryant, Owens and Chad Ochocinco will not participate on special teams, so it is left up in the air how quickly they would respond if the organization felt Owens was about to sign with another team. The Bengals have not indicated whether or not they are ready to offer a contract. If quarterback Carson Palmer had anything to do with it, he would love to have Owens in his group of receivers.

Owens could have an immediate impact on either of these teams. Another weapon at receiver would be huge for the Bengals and a nice compliment to Ochocinco. But as most teams are concerned, will his off-field and locker room behavior have an impact on the organization? That will never be known until he signs and the season plays out. However, there is no doubt Owens has the ability to play football and at a high level. He has the statistics to prove it…1006 receptions, 14,951 yards receiving, and 144 touchdowns in his 15 years in the league.
