Baltimore Ravens Safety Ed Reed Might Miss Season Opener

July 21, 2010- By Jonathan Lowell

The Baltimore Ravens’ defense has been a dominating presence in the NFL for the last decade, and this season they feature one of their strongest defensive units to date. Their secondary may suffer early in the season from the absence of Pro Bowl Safety Ed Reed, who might miss time recovering from off-season hip surgery. NFL odds will surely be affected by his presence on the sidelines.

The Ravens open their season on the “Monday Night Football” program on the road against the New York Jets, and will need the help of Reed against the revamped Jets offense that features newly acquired wide receiver Santonio Holmes.

Reed has already told reporters that he will miss training camp on the physically unable to perform list, and will stay there until the beginning of the season.

NFL rules state that if Reed were to stay on the PUP list for the season opener, he would automatically miss the first six games of the season. If that were to take place, the first game he would be eligible to play in would be the Week 7 match up with the Buffalo Bills. Those betting on NFL player proposition odds may not find lines for Ed Reed before that game.

The former Miami Hurricane has not set a date for when he will take himself off the list, but maintains it will be his decision. He was angered when the team took him off the list the last time he made an appearance on it without telling him.

“I’m going to be on the PUP list for a minute, and I’m not letting them take me off like they did last time without telling me,” Reed said. “I’m just rehabbing. It’s a slow process. I’m going to get out there when I feel good. I can’t give you a date. I don’t know.”

Reed is a six-time Pro Bowler and knows the challenges that lay before the Ravens in the 2010 season. He hopes his team will do their best until his return to the roster.

“Of course, definitely. It’s going to be challenging opening up with the schedule we have whether I’m there or not. It’s leaning that way more than anything. Hopefully, we can weather the storm. We have great players around us to get through those games and be able to make a run,” Reed added.

Doctors reconstructed Reed’s entire hip, and he maintains he will spend as much time as it takes on the PUP list to come back 100 percent.

“I had to reconstruct my whole hip. It’s not something where I can say, ‘I’m going to be back.’ I’m not coming back until I’m well and ready. I don’t care what anybody says. I know I can play football. I’m going to take my time with this and be sure.”

The very best USA sportsbooks have set the Ravens as the favorite to win the AFC North at -115 odds. They are also among the favorites to win the 2010 AFC championship at +700, and their pre-season line to win Super Bowl XLV is set at +1400.
