Pete Carroll Optimistic About Leon Washington’s Return To Seattle Seahawks

June 23, 2010- By Jonathan Lowell

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll told reporters that his recently acquired running back Leon Washington should be ready for the start of training camp.  Washington broke his right leg in Week 7 of the 2009 season against the Oakland Raiders.

The former Pro Bowler is excited about the prospect of playing for a new team, and says the rebuilding feel around Seahawks camp reminds him of the feeling back in 2006 with the rebuilding Jets.

“I’m like, ‘Coach, I’m stoked. I’m so excited,'” Washington recalled telling Carroll. “You can feel the energy in the building, in the meetings.  It kind of reminds me of my first year in New York [in 2006, under then first-year coach Eric Mangini]. Everyone said we were rebuilding — and we made the playoffs,” he said.

The Seahawks picked up Washington in a draft-day trade with the Jets back in April.  The former Florida State standout had just resumed running two weekd prior to the deal, and was a gamble for the Seahawks.  During a road game in Oakland, Washington sustained a compound fracture in the tibia and fibula bones in his right leg.

Washington had an operation to have a metal rod put in his leg that ended the running back’s season.  The Jets traded for former MVP LaDainian Tomlinson, and drafted USC Joe McKnight in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft.

Going back to his roots, Washington trained in Pensacola, Florida in the offseason at the Athletes’ Performance Institute as the Jets and Seahawks doctors discussed his readiness.  The reports were good enough to allow Seahawks general manager John Schneider to trade for Washington.

During practice Wednesday, the Seahawks gamble seemed to be paying off as Washington was seen running clean 20-yard sprints.  Wide Reciever Dieon Branch, who underwent a knee operation after last season, was looking good running alongside Washington.

Coach Pete Carroll is excited about the prospects of both players in the upcoming 2010 season.  He is going to watch their progression over the first few weeks of camp to make a decision on their position on the depth chart.

“We’ll still be very careful in the first couple weeks of camp to make sure he’s really transitioned back in. We won’t rush that,” Carroll said. “But we’re very hopeful, and everything looks like he’s going to be fine.”

USA sportsbooks have set the Seahawks as the underdogs to win the 2010 NFC Championship at +3000.  Their pre-season odds to win Super Bowl XLV have been set at +6000.

Pete Carroll has a lot to be excited especially since who left USC at the right time. The Seahawks has the luxury of playing in one of the weaker divisions. Now that the Cardinals are rearranging many new players the Seahawks look good to win the division.
