Phil Mickelson Struggles In First Round Of 2010 U.S Open

June 17th 2010-  By Bryan Cross

As those who teed off in the morning half of the draw on Day One of the 2010 United States Open at Pebble Beach, the sunshine poured down and the majestic waves on the California coastline crashed on the land as the winds blew.

While the tournament can not be won on the first day, it can most certainly be lost, as world No.2 ranked player Phil Mickelson has struggled through the first 16 holes of his opening round, currently at four over-par as he concludes his round.

This is certainly no the start that Lefty was looking for as he pursues his first U.S Open title after tabbing five runner-up finishes in the last 11 years.

Coming into the tournament, Mickelson has his best chance in recent memory to overtake Tiger Woods for the top spot on in the Official World Golf rankings.

Woods has yet to begin his first round, teeing off at 4:36 pm Est.

Currently, 2003 Masters champion Mike Weir of Canada is atop the leader board in the clubhouse after shooting an opening round of 1-under 70.

Several other notable names are on that first page through the first round as they teed off in the morning.

Luke Donald is widely considered a contender to win the event.  The young European carded an even par round of 71 on Thursday, and will tee off on Friday later in the afternoon.

K.J Choi, Ian Poulter and David Toms all sit at one-under par and remain on the golf course.

With many still to tee of and complete their rounds, it is any one’s guess as to whether or not one player in the field will go low.

Woods won the 2000 U.S Open, the last time the tournament was held at Pebble Beach, by a record 15-shot margin.

A decade later the game’s top player has won 14 majors, but comes to Pebble Beach a different man than he was six months ago following his well-documented off-the-course issues.

Woods has played in five tournaments this season, and has yet to record a win.

Entering the 2010 United States Open, Woods and Mickelson were the top-two betting favorites on USA Online Sportsbooks.
